First Look at Rick and Morty’s Halloween Special Introduces Rick’s “Dark Portal Gun”

The spooky season is almost here, and Rick and Morty Get ready with an anthology of scary stories that introduces a new version of Rick’s iconic portal gun. The “Rick or Treat” special sees new character Lil Wigsley (apparently a parody of Jenna Ortega’s Wednesday Addams) attempt to scam Morty with a series ofrdidestly banaloddly banal horror stories. In this ‘Interdimensional Cable’-style special, the horror stories are part of a larger plot involving Rick and his spooky new guest.

In an exclusive preview of Rick and Morty: Rick or Treat Halloween Special #1Screen Rant can reveal the opening moments of the special, which reveal this Lil Wigsley comes from a dimension only accessible via a new version of Rick’s iconic portal gun – One who can open a “dark portal” and let Lil Wigsley through.

The 64-page comic special arrives September 25 from writer Brockton McKinney (Rick and Morty: Maximum Overdrive) and artist Marc Ellerby (Rick and Morty.) Fans can choose between Ellerby’s main cover, as well as Jarrett Williams’ Children of the Corn/Friday the 13th Parody variant and Aaron Conley’s werewolf-transformation variant. The summary of the issue reads:

Rick is hard at work in the garage, but Morty just won’t stop yapping, so he opens a gate and brings in a strange, goth-looking girl named Lil Wigsley. Rick explains that Lil Wigsley will tell Morty stories if he shuts up and listens – but they’re not just any old stories. They’re horribly banal, but it soon becomes clear that Rick and Sister Lil Wigsley’s intention to distract Morty is more terrifying than the fluffy stories they’ve been spinning!

Rick and Morty's Night Family

Rick and Morty is no stranger to horror, with episodes built around parodies of A Nightmare on Elm Street, The cleaning, HellraiserJordan Peele’s us and Stephen King’s Necessary things. It will be fun for fans to see what horror properties get a Rick and Morty Three in the special, with the comic’s Wednesday Addams already a fascinating figure, turning up dressed as a medieval plague doctor and accompanied by a steampunk wolf-spider. But why does Rick want Morty to be bored on Halloween so much that he challenges Lil Wigsley to do it?

Another question from the comic is how Rick’s Dark Portal Gun will add up Rick and Morty Canon. So far there are several types of gate in the franchiseWith Rick using green portals to travel between realities in the central finite curve, while Evil Morty uses gold portals to travel outside it. Blue portals are also seen, used by President Curtis to travel long distances in one reality, and the masochistic demons of ‘Amortycan Grickfitti’ use a fiery portal to access Hell. However, none of the portals have the same black and purple design that fans see in the preview, begging the question of what type of dimension Rick could be accessing.

Rick and Morty: Rick or Treat Halloween Special #1 is giving fans a dose of horror just in time for Halloween, but along with the scares, there are already fascinating questions about what Rick really went to and where Lil Wigsley actually emerged.
