The DC Universe has had incredible success with The penguinleading to proposals for others Batman spinoffs, including a new rumor for a Clown series. This show could be doomed to fail unless Batman plays a pivotal role in the show. Although Joker was incredibly popular, the disastrous box office results of Joker: Folie à Deux questioned the character’s viability as a protagonist. Yet, Joker has been an incredible attraction, and a spin-off series might actually seem like a good idea, until you recognize how different this character is from the Penguin.
Matt Reeves’ epic crime saga is set to expand with an unbelievable story in Batman – Part II. Despite the imminent launch of the new DC Universe under Peter Safran and James Gunn, the success of The penguin it made this world of Batman and his rogues feel vital to the DC brand. Moving forward, however, will be difficult. With two different DC Universes existing at the same time, the version of Batman will have to differentiate itself from the larger DC canon, and the Clown the series will have to make sure it does one vital thing.
Barry Keoghan’s Joker could have its next spin-off
A new spinoff starring the clown prince of crime appears to be in the works
The latest details suggest that a film starring Barry Keoghan Clown series is ongoing. Following the ratings and critical acclaim for The penguinIt makes sense that Warner Bros. and DC Studios seek to replicate this success with another character from Batman. The Joker has consistently proven to be the most popular foe in Batman’s rogues gallery and with the series’ audience, especially after The penguinit would probably be too high. Instead of moving forward with a new villain like Clayface, it appears the franchise intends to focus heavily on the Joker.
Many actors have played the Joker, and each one has done something unique with their portrayal of the character. The character played leading and supporting roles in major films, appeared unusually in television series such as Gothamand even starred in his own titular film duology. What hasn’t been done with the character yet is a premium streaming series. Following this, a Clown show on HBO would be the best way to do something truly new and unique with the character.
The Joker’s story is good, but it doesn’t work without Batman
Joker and Batman are two sides of the same coin
There is, however, one necessary condition for any Joker series to work. For this to be successful, the show will have to take a very different path than The penguin has and will have to present the character of Batman prominently. Joker and Bruce Wayne have often been portrayed as two sides of the same coin, and this is formative and necessary to understanding the character’s path to the small screen. Even the one starring Joaquin Phoenix Clown tied the character with Batman in his final scene.
This Joker already seems to be a threat in Gotham, so this story wouldn’t be an origin story. Without that room to act, it’s vital that Robert Pattinson’s Batman is able to play a major role in the series. Joker is the madness to Batman’s control, with the two being designed as foils for each other. The Joker’s violence and destruction feel baseless and pointless without the opportunity to tie the villain into Batman’s story. Unlike The penguinBatman would have to play a major role here.
Joker Would Amplify Penguin’s One Disturbing Problem
The Penguin’s Story Seems to Attract Batman’s Attention
The penguin was an incredible and shocking series, although some of the more significant events that occurred should have caught Batman’s attention. This has led to speculation that perhaps Batman has left Gotham City. While The penguin really did a great job crafting a story that doesn’t require Batman to appear, it’s strange not to see him defending the city. Details of his absence can be explained at Batman Part IIwhich would be a satisfying way to tie the stories together.
If there is a story about the Joker, however, and that story does something significant, it’s inevitable that Batman will have to feature prominently. Although Batman is in the early years of his career and although he cannot be everywhere the opening of Batman It clearly shows that he is a known force in the city and that his presence is used to ward off evildoers. Continuing any future spinoffs in this world without Batman would be strange and raise too many questions to avoid.
If HBO and Warner Bros./DC Studios decide to move forward with a Clown series, they will need to ensure they have a strong story that is true to the character’s roots. This will require Batman to be present in some sort of significant capacity, in a way that The penguin no. While other villains may seem like the best choice at this point, the fact is that a Joker series is actually the logical next step for the character and Batman universe. It remains to be seen whether this will come to fruition.
Batman follows the vigilante as he investigates a series of murders committed by a sadistic serial killer targeting political figures in Gotham. He uncovers the hidden corruption in the city, leading him to confront his family’s possible involvement.
