The first great pirate of Star Wars franchise – Crimson Jack – debuted shortly after A New Hope and quickly became a major threat to Han Solo and his new rebel allies. Crimson Jack debuted in the Marvel classic Star Wars comics, which were among the first Star Wars non-film properties. In the years between the releases of the original trilogy films, these comics (and other properties, such as Alan Dean Foster’s novel Mind’s Eye Fragment) expanded the tradition of Star Wars galaxy, keeping viewers invested in the franchise before the next big movie releases.
Original Marvel comics are part of the Star Wars Continuity of Legends, which was previously the official canon of the franchise. The modern Star Wars Canon, which started in 2014, often uses Legends timeline lore as inspiration for its own stories. The original Marvel Comics, while somewhat niche in recent years, has had some of its characters and concepts gain counterparts in the modern canon, with Crimson Jack being a recent example. Despite his relatively short role in Marvel stories, Crimson Jack is a fascinating antagonist, so it’s not surprising that he’s been reintroduced into the modern canon.
