Mercury ends on the heels of several discoveries, leaving readers questioning what will happen to the books' main characters after the final series of events. The book ends with Saeris awakening and discovering that she is half Fae and half vampire.and as she tries to adjust to her new identity, it's clear that this new development will greatly affect her character arc in the second book. Not only does Saeris have to come to terms with the fact that she is no longer human, but her defeat of Malcolm and subsequent transition to vampire have made her Queen of Sansaroth.

These elements alone would be enough to create havoc in the Mercury sequel, but they're not the only factor that will come into play.

After a brief discussion about the fate of the world, Zareth explains that his bond with Kingfisher is so strong that his counterbalance in the universe could threaten to destroy them all.. While Hart has barely scratched the surface of this element, it's clear that this narrative will be the focus of his entire fantasy book series.

Not only does she want to reunite with her brother, but Carrion's twist at the end of the first novel reveals that he is the lost heir of Daianthus. Carrion spent years hiding on Zilvaren and may be one of the only Fae who truly understands and cares about humans and their oppression on other worlds. Now that Saeris has discovered the secret to manipulating mercury, it is possible that she will use this knowledge to return to Zilvaren to seek out her brother and seek revenge on Madra.

While that remains Hart's goal, there's a possibility the series could go on even longer – and that will just depend on whether Hart feels he can wrap up the narrative in just three books. However, Hart's website also mentions that the author may explore possible spin-off books that will focus on the series' secondary characters.

These additional books to the series would likely be in the same timeline and fantasy universe as the original. Mercury seriesbut it would offer readers a new vision and storyline for a new character. Hart's series is full of beloved characters, and she created several whose arcs would serve well as a standalone addition to the series – one example is Carrion Swift, the lost heir of Daianthus and the series' comic relief.

As the acquisition of Netflix by Mercury was announced a few weeks ago, it's safe to assume the adaptation will be a few years away from hitting the screen. This is a huge relief, as Hart Mercury the series has not yet concluded – with the second book due out in autumn 2025. Hart's publishing schedule creates the need for Netflix to be intentional in its pace of adaptationand ensure they avoid overstepping Hart's source material.
