Twilight of the Dead is confirmed
Romero’s latest zombie movie is on the way
Twilight of the Dead is confirmed as George A. Romero’s next and final film and the final chapter of the franchise he started with Night of the Living Dead. Before dying in 2017, Romero began writing Twilight of the Dead, and the unfinished treatment is the basis of the new film. Finally, in 2021, it was confirmed that Twilight of the Dead was being made, but news was delayed a while until the project began in 2023.
In September 2023, it was announced (via Deadline) that Brad Anderson was hired to direct the zombie film. A little different for Anderson, Twilight of the Dead is a far cry from his award-winning film, The train driverthat put the director on the map in 2004. Anderson spoke enthusiastically about the franchise’s rich history, saying:
1968 classic by George Romero Night of the Living Dead It may have been the first real horror film I ever saw and its shock value, its great social relevance and even the means by which it was made were extremely inspiring to me.
George’s “indie spirit”, his “do it yourself” approach to cinema – outside the main industry; on a tight budget; collaborating with family and friends – that’s exactly how I made my first film, and to some extent I still make films now. Night of the Living Deadand many of those that followed married straightforward horror with blunt social commentary. This unexpected combination is what elevated George’s films, and for me, it’s exactly what’s most exciting about them. Twilight of the Dead.

Twilight of the Dead Story Details
What happens in Romero Zombie’s final film?
One thing to understand about Twilight of the Dead story is that it is the final chapter of the franchise. This ends everything, so expect to see what the zombie apocalypse did and how it affected – or destroyed – society. It will take place on an island where humans have tried to escape zombies once again. THE Twilight of the Dead The plot synopsis says it will “[delve] into the dark nature of humanity from the perspective of the last humans on earth who are trapped between undead factions.“
This could be based on the idea introduced in Day of the Dead and Land of the Dead in which some zombies are capable of greater intelligence and start creating specific hordes. If enough time has passed between films, the zombie species may have advanced, even as humanity continues to evolve. Romero’s generally pessimistic attitude is fundamental to the tone of the Undead films, and it is expected that Twilight of the Dead will continue his vision of society even more than the blood of zombies.
