Although it has not yet received prominence, Star Wars revealed many things about Luke Skywalker’s new Jedi Order in canon. By helping launch the new canon, Star Wars: The Force Awakens began its opening crawl with “Luke Skywalker disappeared.” This resulted in Luke’s Jedi Order not appearing in the sequels, but being destroyed before them.
Since then, Luke’s Jedi Order has appeared in a number of places, most notably being first depicted in flashbacks in Star Wars: The Last Jedi. Frustratingly, though, it was never the subject of the story. More and more information about the Jedi Temple and Luke’s Academy was revealed in random places, painting a scattered but fascinating picture of what Luke Skywalker’s new Jedi Order actually looked like in canon. Here’s everything we know about it so far.
Luke’s New Jedi Order Was Based on the Planet Ossus
Old Jedi Library World
For the first few years of knowing about its existence, fans had no idea what planet Luke’s canonical Jedi Temple was actually located on. That was until the 2022 novel Shadow of the Sith by Adam Christopher, which acts as a prequel of sorts to The Force Awakens. This novel did a lot of the heavy lifting in developing Luke’s Jedi Order and revealed that it was built on Ossus.
This construction was actually seen, as well as Ossus, in The Book of Boba Fett before Shadow of the Sith. Luke used android ants to build the first dome-shaped structure of his Jedi Temple, and soon after trained Grogu within it.. The planet Ossus was notable for being the world’s ancient Jedi library Star Wars Legends of the Old Republic era.
There were several generations of students
Jedi Knights and Padawans
Luke’s Jedi Temple was built around 9 ABY, 5 years after the deaths of the Emperor and Darth Vader, but he did not begin formally training students until 15 ABY. It was destroyed in 28 ABY, 13 years later. This means that there was enough time for several groups of new students to be taught at the Jedi Academy on Ossus.
This is checked by Shadow of the Sithwhich takes place in 21 ABY and features a teenage Ben Solo helping to train a group of younger students. Ben Solo was part of the first class, meaning there were at least two age groups present at the temple. Star Wars #50 by Charles Soule and Madibek Musabekov featured a scene of Luke training Ben Solo, and revealed that Ben may have been a full-fledged Jedi Knight before turning to the dark side, meaning this could have been true for others students too.
Luke Skywalker followed the teachings of the Jedi Prequel trilogy
Ancient Jedi traditions
Since the release of the prequel trilogy, many fans have latched onto the idea that the late Republic-era Jedi were flawed. Their strict views on attachment, family, and more have given fans a reason to question them. Whether they were right or not, Luke Skywalker, in restoring the Order, followed in their footsteps.
This is significantly different from Luke’s New Jedi Order in Star Wars Legends, which was largely established before the prequels were released and therefore could not give Luke knowledge of these non-existent strict rules. Luke’s canonical Jedi Order, however, maintained the previous Jedi’s views on attachments, as the lone master attempted to reestablish Jedi tradition. with help only coming from people like the holocrons of Jocasta Nu and Ahsoka Tano herself, who was a Jedi Padawan during the prequel era.
Grogu was Luke’s first student on Ossus
The first apprentice of the new Jedi order
Shortly after establishing his Temple and Academy on Ossus, Luke trained young Grogu in the surrounding countryside. This made the young Jedi Luke’s first official student, aside from his own sister Leia. As confirmed in Star Wars: The Rise of SkywalkerLuke trained his sister in the way of the Jedi on the planet Ajan Kloss, an ancient safe world of Alderaan.
After Leia, Grogu became Luke’s first official student 4 years later when he was more prepared to train students. Before training Grogu and settling on Ossus, Luke scoured the galaxy, researching the history of the Jedi Order and learning as much as he could before teaching full classes. It was during this time that Luke found many Jedi artifacts and ancient texts that he used at his Academy.
Luke had many students he recruited while traveling with Ben Solo
Master and Apprentice, Luke and Ben
During Luke’s early Jedi Academy days, Ben Solo was his central apprentice, and the two traveled the galaxy in search of Jedi history and artifacts. On these trips, Luke would sometimes meet other Force-sensitive children, whom he would offer a place at his Academy.. This was the primary method of recruiting students for the nascent Jedi Master.
Some of Ben’s classmates became his close friends over the years of service and training together. The only named students we know of are three: Tai and Voe, two humans, and a Quarren named Hennix. Additionally, Luke had many other students that fans haven’t met in any other story.
Luke’s Jedi students trained with holocrons
Jocasta Nu’s Jedi Archives
As seen in The Rise of Kylo Ren comics by Charles Soule and Will Sliney, Luke’s students often trained with holocrons. These Jedi information storage devices were accessed by the Force and contained teachings from Jedi and other Force teachers of the past. Many of these holocrons came from the Jedi Archives on Coruscant, saved by librarian Jocasta Nu.
In the 2017 race Darth Vaderalso by Charles Soule, it was revealed that Jocasta Nu survived the Jedi Purge and Order 66, and gradually recovered pieces of the Archives, hiding them in a cave. Luke retrieved this cache, implementing the information found in it for his own training purposes.
Ben Solo destroyed Luke’s temple and gym
The Force Storm and Ben’s Fall
All of this led to one fateful night in 28 ABY, where Luke Skywalker peered into the mind of his nephew and apprentice, Ben Solo. Luke saw cause for great concern during Ben’s training and saw fit to look into the boy’s thoughts – and saw that it was far worse than he could have imagined. Terrified, Luke ignited his lightsaber on instinct and woke Ben up. The terrified young man thought Luke had come to finish the job and fought back.
The two sabers clashed and Ben dropped his hut onto Luke. He then summoned a force storm with his rage, destroying Luke’s Jedi Temple and ending the era of the new Jedi Order.. Ben retreated to Supreme Leader Snoke, fought the last surviving students, and fell fully to the dark side, while Luke went into self-imposed exile. This tragic night then set the stage for the next chapter of Star Wars saga.
