Every Dragon Prince Season, Ranked From Worst to Best

Notice! This post contains spoilers for The Dragon Prince.

Netflix Animated Fantasy Show The Dragon Prince just concluded season 7 – here are every season of the series ranked from worst to best. The Dragon Prince is without a doubt one of the most underrated shows on Netflix. Incredibly, the show has a 100% critic score on Rotten Tomatoesindicating how bright it is. In fact, with its fantasy elements, The Dragon Prince is the perfect show for fans of The Lord of the Ringseven though it is not as prominent as many other popular fantasy shows, as it has captured many of the same themes and conventions of the fantasy genre.

The show mainly focuses on Ezra and Callum, two princes from the human kingdom of Katolis, and Rayla, a Moonshadow Elf from the magical kingdom of Xadia. For generations, the human world and the magical world have been at war with each other, but when Rayla, Callum and Ezran band together to save the Dragon Prince's egg, that begins to change. The show is truly epic from start to finish, but some seasons were much better than others. Here are all seven seasons of The Dragon PrinceRanked from worst to best.

Season 5

Season 5 lacked the action that other Dragon Prince seasons have

5th season of The Dragon Princereleased on July 22, 2023, it was the weakest of all seven seasons. While the acting, animation, and characters remained brilliant throughout the season, the story simply didn't measure up to other seasons of the series. In part, this is due to the change in direction the series experienced in the previous season.

5th season of The Dragon Princereleased on July 22, 2023, it was the weakest of all seven seasons.

Seasons 1 to 3 of The Dragon Prince all followed a very specific arc, in which Rayla, Callum, and Ezran attempted to save the Dragon Prince's egg and unify the human and magical realms. This came to light at the end of The Dragon Prince Season 3, which saw a massive war break out between (most) humans and the magical beings of Xadia. The season 3 finale was therefore action-packed, culminating in a brilliant final showdown.

In some ways, it felt like the series had concluded perfectly, which is no doubt why Season 4 took a significantly different direction. Starting with Season 4, The Dragon Prince had the caption The Mystery of Aaravos. This provided the show with an entirely new arc, focusing on the terrifying Startouch Elf, Aaravos, who seemed determined to destroy the human world and was evidently invincible.

While Season 4 was able to focus on this setting and build this story, Season 5 felt a little more lost in terms of direction. It was clear that season 5 was supposed to act as a bridge between the first season of The Mystery of Aaravos and the epic stories that were to come, but that made season 5 seem a little disposable. It wasn't a terrible season, but in a series that was previously so perfectly crafted and captivating, having a somewhat boring narrative season was a huge disappointment.

Season 4

The Dragon Prince Slowed Down After Season 3's Epic Battle

As mentioned, Season 4 was the first season of The Dragon Prince to have The Mystery of Aaravos as captionand therefore had a lot of ground to cover in terms of establishing an entirely new narrative arc. While this was undoubtedly a challenge, it at least made the season feel fresh and gave the show a place to go. This was particularly important after the conclusion of Season 3, which felt like a perfect ending.

There were some choices made this season that were a little disappointing.

However, there were some choices made this season that were a little disappointing. For one thing, after Rayla and Callum finally acknowledged their feelings for each other at the end of Season 3, the beginning of Season 4 revealed that Rayla had struck out on her own and a distance (both figurative and literal) had grown between them. After three seasons of the relationship developing slowly and intentionally, it was disappointing to see this change. It seemed that everything that had been developed before was left aside.

On the other hand, some changes The Dragon Prince Season 4 was quite exciting. Claudia, perhaps one of the most dynamic and complex characters on the show, had a particularly interesting arc during this season, as she used dark magic to resurrect her father, Viren, and then became obsessed with keeping him alive. This was really the beginning of the end for her in terms of becoming genuinely evil, so that aspect of the season was quite compelling.

Season 7

The conclusion of the saga unfortunately seemed rushed

Unfortunately, 7th season of The Dragon Prince It wasn't as brilliant an ending as it could have been. As many expressed concern, the show's conclusion felt rushed. It's unclear exactly why the show came to an end in Season 7, though suspicions that the show was canceled for whatever reason have only grown, especially since, as of Season 6, there didn't seem to be an end anytime soon.

Many new facets of this story were built during Season 6, and it seemed impossible that one season could wrap everything up effectively and satisfactorily. Unfortunately, this proved to be partially true based on the choices made in Season 7. Several aspects of season 6 that felt like they were just getting started were effectively abandoned or glossed over in the final season, the most disappointing being Callum's temptation with dark magic. In previous seasons, this arc would have spanned multiple seasons, which is what Season 6 suggested could be coming.

Instead, this arc took a backseat. There were hints of this inner turmoil for Callum, especially when it looked like Aaravos was going to win the day and Callum had to make some difficult decisions, but it was nowhere near the complex and deep narrative arc that many had hoped for. The heroes who defeated Aaravos felt equally rushed. There was no doubt that Callum, Rayla, and Ezran would be victorious, but Season 6 threw so many obstacles in their path that it seemed like it would take entire seasons before they prevailed.

In the grand scheme of things, Aaravos was defeated surprisingly quicklyand although he promised to return in seven years, that threat carried little weight because the show was ending. A number of other strange choices also contributed to this season's disappointment, including the complete change in Ezran's character. The hopeful, kind-hearted boy had become a ruthless king who turned against his own brother, and instead of complex character development, it felt like a betrayal. Minor choices, like revealing Zym's voice as a throwaway joke at the end of the show, also didn't go over well.

Season 6

The plot of Aaravos of the Dragon Prince gained strength in season 6

Although Season 6 was unknowingly the show's penultimate season, and the conclusion was quite disappointing, the season was quite strong. During this season, Aaravos' threat became much more apparent, but his character was also developed in interesting ways. Most notably, it was revealed that Aaravos' daughter was killed because she gave magic to a human, which was truly brutal. While it certainly didn't excuse all the evil he had done to the world since then, it made him a more fascinating character.

There were also major developments in the story, including the death of the original big villain, Viren. He also developed in more interesting ways before his death, revealing that he had fallen deeper and deeper into using dark magic because he was trying to save the life of his son, Soren, who had become incredibly ill. While the family didn't exactly get the closure they deserved, it did allow the audience to have more sympathy for Viren, and he died a hero's death in the end.

Season 2

The Dragon Prince Season 2 Proved That A Sequel Season Could Work

Season 2 was the third best season of The Dragon Princewhich is particularly impressive because sequels, whether seasons of shows or movies, are notoriously difficult. With The Dragon PrinceHowever, Season 2 managed to maintain the heart and tone of the first season while still doing right by the characters and their stories from Season 1. In fact, as any good sequel should, 2nd season of The Dragon Prince perfectly built on the characterization and stories that were developed in season 1.

Season 2 managed to maintain the heart and tone of the first season while also doing right by the characters and their stories from Season 1.

Season 2 could also have suffered in the middle of the previous three seasons The Dragon Prince became The Mystery of Aaravosbut he also avoided that fate. Instead, it served as a bridge, adding new characters and plot twists without derailing the larger narrative or acting merely as a middle ground for Seasons 1 and 3. Season 2 really stands on its own, and even at In light of the five seasons that followed, it remains one of the series' best.

2

Season 1

The season that started it all was one of the best

As the season that started it all and significantly contributed to The Dragon Prince world building, Season 1 is the second best season of the entire series. It can be very difficult to hook the audience in the first season of a series, especially in the fantasy genre, where so many characters, kingdoms, magical abilities, etc. are present. However, The Dragon Prince proved to be immediately compelling, introducing main characters Ezran, Callum and Rayla in a way that made viewers want to see more.

The Dragon Prince Season 1 also wasted no time in leaving the stakes out and getting viewers invested in the larger conflicts between Katolis/the human kingdoms and Xadia. Even after rewatching it, compared to all the seasons that followed, the first season of The Dragon Prince hold on. In fact, the first season set the tone for the entire show, and that was clearly quite effective given the show's six renewals and its impressive Rotten Tomatoes score.

Season 3

The Dragon Prince's best season ended in the final showdown

The best season of The Dragon Prince It's the 3rd seasonthe last season before the show became The Mystery of Aaravosand the season that ended with the epic confrontation between magical beings and humans. In addition to that incredible final war, this season incorporated a number of compelling new characters and explored the truth about what had happened between humans and dragons long ago. Season 3 was always the season to beat, and even in the end, no season surpassed it.

Unfortunately, season 7 of The Dragon Prince marked the end of the epic fantasy show, and it's still unclear if there will be any future for the show. Interestingly, Season 7 ended with several characters referencing Aaravos' (and Claudia's) inevitable return. This appears to have left the door open for the story to continue should the show be picked up in the future, but whether that will happen entirely remains to be seen. At the moment, there is no real evidence that The Dragon Prince someday I will return.
