One of the many exciting announcements from The Game Awards 2024 is the open world Game of Thrones action RPG, Game of Thrones: King's Road. The RPG adventure will allow players to explore Westeros alongside some of their favorite characters from the acclaimed TV show. Although not much information has yet been released, the official website provides a preview of the three classes that will be available and some limited details about their connection to the Game of Thrones universe.
The trailer features playable characters from the three classes in Game of Thrones: King's Road, and shows what's to come in terms of combat. Players will encounter many familiar characters from the franchise, and each of the three unique classes will have abilities and attacks inspired by archetypes seen in Game of Thrones. Here's a look at all three classes announced so far in the upcoming action RPG game, Game of Thrones: King's Roadwith launch scheduled for 2025.
Knight Class Details in Game of Thrones: Kingsroad
Longsword Specialist
A unique first class in the newly revealed Game of Thrones: King's Road is inspired by the Sworn Knight found defending the Seven Kingdoms. According to the Game of Thrones: King's Road website, the Knight class is designed around the “Refined and balanced swordsmanship of a Westerosi knight” like Ser Jaime Lannister or Jorah Mormont, and will incorporate attacks using a longsword and “Calculated swordsmanship.” This class will likely feature defense mechanics and dodging skills.
It's unclear what advantages each class might have outside of combat, or whether there will be any advantages in terms of dialogue, exploration, or discovery options in the open world. The Knight would likely swear allegiance to a specific houseand since the game is set after the deadly events of the Red Wedding, there aren't many great options to choose from. Players will have to wait for more information to see what specific unique traits and abilities the Knight possesses. King's Road.
Mercenary class details in Game of Thrones: Kingsroad
Two-Handed Ax Expert
The Sellsword class in Game of Thrones: Kingsroad is a barbarian style class that will utilize heavy attacks with “huge two-handed axes.” These brute-force fighters are inspired by both the Wildling and Dothraki show's combat styles, meaning they will likely incorporate tanking abilities and excel at taking down larger opponents or large groups of enemies. The brutality of the wildling raiders and Dothraki hordes is a force to be reckoned with, so this class will likely encapsulate their strength.
Players can look to characters like Dothraki chieftain Khal Drogo or fan favorite Tormund Giantsbane as references to the Sellsword class. The choice of “Sellsword” as the name for this class also implies an interest in gold or some type of monetary gain. THE Game of Thrones show has real mercenaries – Bronn, for example – but it's unclear whether the class will capture the mercenary's sense of humor.
Assassin Class Details in Game of Thrones: Kingsroad
Dual Dagger Specialist
The third class in Game of Thrones: King's Road is the Assassin, and appears to be modeled somewhat blatantly around Arya Stark after she became part of the “enigmatic faceless men.” Building a class around this group is a no-brainer and we hope it integrates stealth and deception abilities into combat in a meaningful way, although all that's clear right now is that Assassins will use “double daggers” and get involved “in skillful, dance-like combat.”
Although information is quite scarce about each of the three classes in Game of Thrones: King's RoadIt's clear that fighting and/or combat styles are the focus here, and the RPG elements at play for each class aren't apparent. Players will have to wait for the Game of Thrones: King's Road full launch in 2025 to get a full picture of what each class is capable of.
