The next Green Lantern show, titled Flashlightshas already started to assemble a strong cast, increasing expectations for the DCU episode. Everything that is known about Flashlights came from the mouth of James Gunn himself as the filmmaker continues to lay the groundwork for what we hope will be DC's cinematic resurgence. Flashlights fits into many of the films and shows in Chapter One of the DCU, titled “Gods and Monsters,” and will be the first proper integration of the titular Green Lanterns into the universe after a brief tease in 2025. Superman.
When the show launches, the DCU will have three Green Lanterns. As mentioned, the first will be Nathan Fillion's Guy Gardner, making his DCU debut in Superman. The other two heroes will be introduced for the first time in Flashlightswith Gunn recently announcing the actors who will play John Stewart and Hal Jordan's famous DC Green Lanterns. Alongside these two actors, several others were cast in Flashlightsmaking the show even more anticipated after Gunn initially described it as an Earth-based detective series that is an integral part of the DCU's overarching story.
Kyle Chandler
Friday Night Lights (2006-2011), Zero Dark Thirty (2012), Godzilla: King of the Monsters (2019)
One of two leads in DC's Flashlights will be Kyle Chandler. Chandler was announced to play Hal Jordan in the October 2024 series, one of the most popular iterations of DC Comics' Green Lantern Corps. Chandler will be the co-leader of Flashlights as Jordan, and will likely be portrayed as the more experienced member of the Corps, in contrast to the younger, fresher Jon Stewart. In the comics, Jordan is one of the main members of the Justice League, raising the question of how big of a role he will play in the DCU. Flashlights.
Kyle Chandler is a prolific actor in modern Hollywood, having appeared in numerous projects across multiple franchises in the 2000s and 2010s. Chandler's previous roles have come in the world of TV, with the actor making a name for himself on shows such as Homefront, Early Edition, and And Joana? Undoubtedly, Chandler's breakout role was Friday night lightsleading him to bigger roles in Hollywood in films such as Super 8, Argo, The Wolf of Wall Street, Game Nightand First Manas well as the Netflix TV show Lineage.
Aaron Pierre
Krypton (2018-2019), Old Man (2021), Rebel Ridge (2024)
Alongside Chandler as Hal Jordan will be Aaron Pierre as Jon Stewart. Stewart is arguably the other best-known DC Comics Green Lantern after Jordan, with the character gaining fan-favorite status over the years. In FlashlightsStewart will likely be portrayed as the greener of the two protagonists who recently joined the Green Lantern Corps. This will give Buddy Cop a dynamic to the show that Gunn and his team are aiming for, initially being described as a TRUE Detective-style series while also setting up future DCU stories.
Pierre doesn't have the same longevity in his career as Chandler, but he will no doubt solidify that after several high-profile roles in the 2020s. His early TV work included Prime Suspect 1973, The Word, and Britannia. Interestingly, Flashlights It won't be Pierre's first experience with DC-based TV, as he played the character Dev-Em on SyFy's Krypton. In 2024, Pierre had two important roles in the form of Rebel Ridge and Mufasa: The Lion Kingleading fans to call for him to be cast as Jon Stewart and James Gunn.
Kelly McDonald
Trainspotting (1996), No Country for Old Men (2007), Boardwalk Empire (2010-2014)
Outside of the two protagonists, some other actors were hired to play Flashlights. One of them is Kelly MacDonald, broken by The Hollywood Reporter shortly after the announcements that Chandler and Pierre had joined the production. MacDonald will reportedly play the character of Sheriff Kerry, who is described as a no-nonsense police officer who has a deep devotion to her family as well as the community she comes from. Given that Flashlights is about a dark mystery that stems from a murder in the heart of the United States, Kerry will help Jordan and Stewart discover the hidden secrets of their city.
Before being cast in DC's upcoming TV show, MacDonald appeared in a wide variety of well-known projects. His first film credit came in Danny Boyle Train location as Diane Coulston, a role she reprized in T2 Train Station. Furthermore, MacDonald is best known for There is no country for old people and Boardwalk Empirethe latter of which earned him a Primetime Emmy nomination. MacDonald also appeared in Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows - Part 2, and gave the voice of Princess Merida in the Disney film Brave.
Garrett Dillahunt
Deadwood (2004-2005), Rising Hope (2010-2014), Fear the Walking Dead (2018-2021)
According to a report from Deadline, Garret Dillahunt was also cast in Flashlights. Dillahunt is the latest actor to be cast in the project as William Macon, a character described as a self-righteous modern day cowboy. Dillahunt's Macon is also said to be a man prone to scheming, who hides a ruthless ambition behind a charming facade. How Macon Fits In FlashlightsThe story remains to be seen, but his conspiracy-based mind will likely help or hinder the titular heroes' investigation.
Lanterns begins filming in January 2025, which means more actors will likely be announced as part of its cast from now on.
Dillahunt, like Chandler, is a well-known actor who has a long list of credits over the past two decades. Dillahunt is perhaps best known for TV shows such as Deadwood, raising hope, and Fear the undeadalthough he has several other TV and film credits besides these. Dillahunt has worked with MacDonald before as part of There is no country for old people, before appearing in films like Looper, 12 years a slave, and Army of the Dead. Other TV credits include The 4400, Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles, and The Mindy Project.
As is evident from Flashlights' cast members so far, the show is shaping up to be incredibly interesting. The assembled cast has some experience portraying characters in neo-Western projects, with Dillahunt and MacDonald playing roles in There is no country for old people and Pierre Rebel Ridge. This will suit the writing talent of Chris Mundy - who worked on Ozark, true detective, and Criminal Minds while his partners Tom King, a prolific DC Comics writer, and Damon Lindelof (Lost, The Leftovers, Watchmen) will imbue Flashlights with the necessary comic book/fantasy elements to fit it perfectly into Gunn's fledgling DC Universe.
