In anticipation of the premiere of the show, Screen Rant Interviewed Émilie Bierre and Caleb Dolden to discuss CarpetThe unique challenge the latter found in playing two characters in one, as the former connected to her character’s desire to break free from her isolated farm home, and the joy the two had in bonding while discovering Arlo and Meryl’s sister dynamics.
Arlo’s stay by the referee proved a fun challenge for Dolden
“… It helped me push how far I could go with my acting.”
Screen Rant: I’ve seen the first half of CarpetAnd it’s been such an intense ride so far, I can’t wait to see what happens in the second half. Calf, I’ll start with you. You have such an interesting role to play two characters in one, as you flip back and forth between Arlo and the Arbiter. What is it like, from the performance side, really trying to ensure that the audience knows the difference between the two characters?
Caleb Dolden: Well, to make sure the audience knows the difference, there’s a slight difference in the eyes and the voice as well, because also in the voice. These are the subtle differences, so you can really tell the difference and how they talk.
Was that a challenge for you to really figure out how to bring both these different people to life?
Caleb Dolden: Yes, but I also enjoyed it because it helped me push how far I could go with my acting.
“… I’m having so much fun just watching you grow…”
Emily, I’ll turn to you next. You are not quite brooding, but Meryl really wants to get out of this small world away from your parents, but also still show love for them. What is it like to walk the fine line when you have scenes with Yvonne and Scott?
Émilie Bierre: Yes, I think it was all Ian’s writing. It was all there on the page, and that’s what we really wanted to do with this project, is how relatable it was. We’ve all been there, or you [Caleb] Will get there at some point, although your mom is awesome. But, you know, we all get to that phase where you’re like, “I want to be on my own, but I also need my parents so much.” So, yeah, I think it just came naturally, because I think that’s something that everybody goes through. And I really enjoy Meryl, when you first meet her, she’s the teenager, and then with everything going on, she has to become the young woman really quickly to make sure that she keeps her little brother safe, herself safe, and she’s Just trying to help as much as she can.
So, I really enjoyed just watching her grow, and just wait until you see the other half of it. We have some very deep stuff in the last four episodes. It was so much fun to play this character, and I really enjoyed her so much. We would only get two scripts at a time, and each time I was like, “Oh my God, yes, what’s next”? And then you get in, you’re like, “Oh, amazing!”
Bierre & Dolden pulled from their own sibling relationships for their dynamic
“…I just wanted him to feel safe with all of it.”
You mentioned protecting your brother, and I love how they really go off on their own adventure when they try to learn more about that. I would love to hear what it was like for you both to find the dynamic of love and care for one another, even when things get more and more intense.
Émilie Bierre: Yes, again, it was very relatable for both of us. I am a big sister in real life, I have a younger sister whom I love very much, but she is annoying sometimes, and I annoy her too. you [Caleb] Have an older brother, so we get the relationships very well. I think that was the other beautiful thing about it, is that sibling relationship, and how much they have to rely on each other for that. That love is so real and so deep, and it just felt like it was instinct.
First of all, just to know Caleb, we were really close on set. I really consider him like a little brother now. So, yeah, I think when you get the chance to build that chemistry on and off-screen, it just brings so much to the scenes that you’re going to do afterwards. So, we had a lot of fun doing it, and he was just so amazing. I was also a child on set, and I just wanted him to feel safe with all this. But you [Caleb] Just such great work.
Caleb Dolden: Thank you! [Chuckles]
Émilie Bierre: You’re welcome, I’m really proud of you. So, yeah, it just happened, and we just played with it every day.
Caleb Dolden: It was pretty easy, because we got together pretty quickly. So, once we have that, we have a huge part of Arlo and Meryl’s relationship quite a lot, and I think that shows in the show.
The duo is certainly open to future Carpet Seasons
“It was just such a dream experience to work on.”
So, I obviously haven’t seen how the second half of the show goes, and we can’t get into spoilers, but I’d like to hear, you know, a puzzle box mystery like this one that can run for multiple seasons and add Discover new secrets. What are both your thoughts on possibly continuing this world beyond the first season?
Émilie Bierre: It would be lovely. We don’t know, we will see what happens with it. Hopefully, people will enjoy it and want more. We are definitely ready for more. It was just such a dream experience to work on. But, yeah, now we just have to wait and see how the world will welcome the show. That’s the exciting thing right now.
Caleb Dolden: And we’re really proud of the season we’re having right now, so we’ll see. It would be great.
