Elrond’s cast of rings of power makes a lot more sense now

While Charles Edwards’ Celebrimbor looked older than some expected, Robert Aramayo’s Elrond looked a little younger than expected. Fans of The Lord of the Rings I had seen Hugo Weaving portray Elrond masterfully in Peter Jackson’s film The Lord of the Rings and Hobbit trilogies, and were used to his mature, distant melancholy. But Aramayo’s joyful youth makes more sense now.

Elrond is starting to show some interesting signs of character development, and The Rings of Power the third season will continue like this. McKay commented: “We cast him to play the most optimistic character in the series,“describing the version of Elrond they created for The Rings of Power season 1. However, that optimism will fade.

The showrunners stated: “We’re going to take you on a journey, we’re going to break you down because this is Elrond’s story.“This clarifies that young Elrond, played by Robert Aramayo, will disappear in the miserable, powerful and elegant spectrum that he is in the Third Age in the books and films. The Rings of Power Season 2 built on the optimistic Elrond, but began to tear him down with the Siege of Eregion. The contrast between Elrond at the beginning of the show and Elrond at the end will make his descent into despair more powerful.

Elrond’s participation in the Siege of Eregion began his problems, already beginning the proper development of Aramayo’s character.

When the Second Age of Middle-earth ends, Elrond should have a wife, which will make him happy for a while. However, the trauma will hit Elrond’s wife, seeing her depart Middle-earth, leaving Elrond behind. Elrond will have no parents around to support him after he is separated from them by the ransacking of his childhood home. Although alive, they remain absent. Elrond’s wife in Lord of the Rings is called Celebrían, and she has not yet been cast in The Rings of Power, but this will be vital to Elrond’s journey. The Rings of Power showrunners confirmed at SDCC that Celebborn will be joining the show despite his absence thus far. Celebborn’s appearance in Rings of Power is essential to Celebrían because he is her father. Galadriel and Celeborn had Celebrían, who married Elrond and there was Arwen. Celebrían needs great chemistry with Elrond for her journey to shine, making for a good cast.

It is true that Celebrían’s traumatic encounter with the Orcs is only a small part of Elrond’s tragedy, but Elrond can never truly be “broken“without his wife’s desertion. Celebrían’s choice was more than fair, but Elrond must experience the slow and gradual departure of all those he loves from his life.including Arwen, to become the tragic figure he truly is. It’s a relief that most Elves never actually die. Lord of the Rings – hopefully Elrond will see his parents, wife and daughter in Valinor. Until then, Aramayo is the perfect actor to show Elrond’s growing loneliness.

Elrond will eventually leave Middle-earth with the other two bearers of the Elven Rings of Power in The Lord of the Rings. This will mark the end of the Third Age, proving the cataclysmic significance of the Three. Elrond’s status as bearer of one of the Three is ahead of him on the show and it will be the real turning point for him. In receiving Vilya, Elrond will inherit great power, which will enhance his growing maturity and development into the Elrond of the Third Age. Robert Aramayo is prepared to embody this transformation in The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power.
