Precipitation and Arcane star Ella Purnell shares conflicted feelings about her recent success in video game adaptations, revealing her concerns about being typecast. In his television roles in Bitter sweet and Belgravia in the late 2010s and early 2020s, Purnell came into his own. This was followed by her performance as Jackie in the Showtime thriller Yellow Jackets where the artist proved to be a scene stealer. But with Lucy's one-two punch in Prime Video's sci-fi dystopia Precipitation and voicing Jinx in the Emmy-nominated Netflix animated series ArcanePurnell has been front and center on some of the best video game adaptations.
Purnell spoke to the crowd at this year's MCM x EGX 2024 event, revealing his worries about being typecast in video game series and filmsIn the quote below, via Popversethe Yellow Jackets alum reflects on being part of two major adaptations and shares that she considered staying away from video game adaptations:
“Here's the truth, and I feel guilty saying this, but I'm not a gamer and I don't know how I got two video game adaptations that were good. I don't know how it happened, but it happened. I don’t know the answer.”
“Actually, I think I need to stay away from video game adaptations now because I'll be stigmatized. I'm going to be the video game girl. There are worse things than that, I suppose.
What do Purnell's concerns about being Typecast mean?
The fear of being seen a certain way by agents and decision makers in Hollywood is definitely valid. For a long time it was held that, with occasional exceptions, television stars could not transition to cinema. This has all but been ruled out in recent decades as A-list actors have made their way to the small screen. But the issue is arguably more prevalent at the gender level.
Actors known for horror films may largely stick to that genre, as is the case with TV sci-fi stars. Cast members on popular teen dramas have long struggled to transition into more adult roles. These questions have also changed a little. But there are absolutely a tendency for casting directors to lean on actors who have proven themselves with a specific type of story and character. Fortunately, this understandable bias in the casting process can also be stopped.
His filmography is diverse
Purnell's other big television series in 2024 was the comedic thriller Sweet peawhich was renewed for season 2. The actor plays Rhiannon, a seemingly normal young woman with a dark secret. The phenomenon of being stereotyped is undeniable. But with enough time and All of Purnell's protagonists are markedly different, all presenting different strengthsshe should absolutely avoid this worry.
