Ella Purnell breaks down the competitive dynamic at Sweetpea
“This invisibility is a kind of self-fulfilling prophecy that she has carried into her adult life.”
Screen Rant: I like the different dynamics in Sweet peasbut of course it all starts with Rhiannon vs Julia. Why does Julia hold on to her so much after all these years of abuse?
Ella Purnell: Great question. That’s definitely the essence of Rhiannon and not something I’ve talked about a lot today. I’m very glad you noticed this. I think she was, as is often the case when you experience a traumatic event in childhood, stuck in the past. She can’t understand why this happened to her. She can’t understand it, she can’t accept it, and it affects everything in Rhiannon’s life.
When we meet Rihanna in the first episode, she is invisible. Nobody sees her. She is considered quiet and is called that, and she resents it. But I also think it’s kind of presumptuous. I think when she was a child she learned to hide to avoid the school bully. And this invisibility is a kind of self-fulfilling prophecy that she has carried into her adult life.
Screen Rant: There’s also Marina, the junior detective played by Leah Harvey. They have a moment of understanding early on, but you’ll still have to cover up some murder. Can you talk about your cat and mouse game with the police officer?
Ella Purnell: Yes, I love Leah too. They are such phenomenal actors and a pleasure to work with. Some of my favorite scenes were Rihanna vs Marina and the cat and mouse game is very exciting. Obviously, this works as a fantastic storytelling tool to up the stakes and that invisibility.
I was just talking about how loving Rhiannon is when she starts killing and feels that power. She likes to be seen, but she is too noticeable. Marina is next to her, and, as you say, Marina sees her. What are the chances that her case will be assigned to someone who is so closely connected to Rhiannon, who is really in Rhiannon’s head? I think Rhiannon sees this and understands that this is a real threat. This man sees her like no one else.
Looking forward to the second season of Sweetpea and Fallout
“It could actually go a million different ways, and I’m really interested to see which one they choose.”
Screen Rant: After the final episode, I desperately needed a second season. Are you hoping for a second season and how far do you plan to take the story?
Ella Purnell: Oh my god. Let’s release the first season first and see what people think. I would love to. I love this character and this team, and it has truly been the most fulfilling, incredible and challenging part of my career. It would be an honor to do it again, but it’s far from over.
Screen Rant: You’ve been killing it in the TV department lately, in between… Yellow JacketsAnd Fall out. What are you most looking forward to from fans? Fall out Season 2?
Ella Purnell: I don’t know what they’ll see. I don’t have a script yet, so I don’t know when we’ll shoot. I’m useless because I don’t know anything. [Laughs]
They left her in such a vulnerable state. I don’t know what will happen. She could turn into a serial killer and it would make sense. But she could also just pull on her boots and get out of this situation, and that would make sense too. This could actually go a million different ways and I’m really curious which one they’ll choose.
