While Abbott Elementary Not primarily focused on romance, the workplace sitcom still has many memorable couples. Abbott ElementaryThe cast of characters is reliably hilarious, and the workplace mockumentary mostly focuses on the trials of their work lives. From field trips to fire drills, Abbott Elementary‘s talent have plenty to keep them busy during most of the show’s outings. Despite this, the series still somehow finds plenty of time to explore the love life of its heroes. ABbut Elementary Season 4 may change that, but the first three seasons of the show constantly updated viewers about their romantic entanglements.

From Janine and Gregory’s “will they, won’t they” dynamic to Barbara’s happy marriage, Abbott Elementary Has explored the personal life of its main characters as much as their professional progression. However, not all Abbott ElementaryS romantic relationships are created directly. For every exciting storyline like Janine and Gregory’s slow-burn office romance, there are low-stakes plots like Melissa and Captain Robinson’s largely off-screen tryst. Abbott Elementary’s couples are a mixed bag, and a look back at the first three seasons of the show proves that the series invested more time and story focus on some romances than others.

Gregory and Taylor
Barbara Howard’s daughter never seriously dated Gregory
Although the first season of Janine and Gregory’s romance dates back to Abbott Elementarys pilot, the couple didn’t even come close to dating in season 1. While Janine was busy with Tariq, Gregory briefly dated Barbara Howard’s daughter, Taylor. The contrast between Gregory’s staid, self-serious attitude and Taylor’s party-girl lifestyle is funny, and the whole arc justifies itself when Barbara uses the phrase “Broken boy“to describe her co-worker while quoting her daughter. However, there is no denying that the flirtations of Gregory and Taylor felt like a stop-gap designed to stoke the flames between him and the heroine of the show.

Janine and Maurice
Vince Staples’ Season 2 character was a likable distraction
like Taylor, Vince Staples’ Morris was a fun addition too Abbott Elementarys gallery of supporting characters. Unfortunately, his relationship with Janine was just as transparently unnecessary as Gregory’s affair with Barbara’s daughter. Rapper-turned-actor Staples put in a charismatic turn as Morris, but it was clear that Janine was never going to end up with Gregory’s best friend for good. Maurice’s relationship with Janine felt frustratingly like an excuse to keep the show’s central couple apart, making his return unlikely. That said, Abbott Elementary Season 4’s storyline may surprise viewers with a welcome comeback of the short-lived love interest.

Melissa and Captain Robinson
Melissa’s new beau has almost no screen time in Season 3
Mike O’Malley’s Captain Robinson was a perfect love interest for Melissa, and the no-nonsense teacher flirted with the fire captain until his first appearance in season 2. That said, Melissa and Captain Robinson’s relationship cannot be ranked between The best pairing of the show. Abbott Elementary Season 3 barely gave the pair any shared screen time, with their flirtations limited to one brief conversation in an early episode. The next time Captain Robinson appeared, viewers were as shocked as Barbara to discover that they had been hooking up off-screen between episodes. Now, season 4 needs to flesh out the pairing.
6
Barbara and Gerald Howard
Barbara and Gerald are Abbott Elementary’s most reliable couple
While Melissa and her new guy didn’t get enough screen time to seriously establish their chemistry, Barbara and her husband Gerald are an even more extreme example of this approach. Barbara Howard’s husband only appeared in a few Abbott Elementary EpisodesAlthough this is arguably justified by the duration and stability of their relationship. While Melissa’s off-screen Abbott Elementary Romance felt like a discount since viewers missed the courtship of the couple, Barbara and Gerald’s reliable off-screen happiness is more secure, if a little staid and boring compared to the drama between the veteran teacher’s coworkers.
5
Jacob and Zach
Jacob and Zach’s long relationship ended in tragedy
Jacob and Zach’s relationship lasted longer than any other couple Abbott Elementarys story save for Barbara and Gerald. As such, it was a real shock when the couple broke up bitterly in season 3. This brutal surprise casts a dark shadow over their relationship and, on re-watch, it becomes increasingly clear that the pair were never so well-matched. Zach’s passion as a sneakerhead clashed with Jacob’s pretentious tastes, while both characters fueled their shared love of gossip and drama. By the time the couple broke up, Jacob didn’t even try to hide how toxic their dynamic had become.
That said, the relationship between Zach and Jacob was not all bad. In the first two seasons of the show, Abbott Elementarys reliable couple shared plenty of sweet moments When it seemed like they were destined to last forever. Season 3’s big breakup means Abbott Elementary would have a hard time getting Zack and James back together, but it’s hard to deny that they share something special. The characters are superior to each other and are definitely better apart, but this does not make their early interactions together any less sweet on a re-watch. Like Janine, James now has to find his Gregory in season 4.
4
Gregory and Amber
Amber was charming but the relationship was fooling no one
While Abbott Elementary Season 4 may revive Gregory’s main ambitions, season 2 puts a lamper obstacle between him and Janine. Amber was the mother of one of the children in Gregory’s class, and although she was perfectly nice, it was always clear that her relationship with the young teacher was doomed. Janine and Gregory were already well aware of the growing attraction between them when Janine began dating Maurice and Gregory began pursuing Amber, meaning the sharp, independent Amber Acted primarily as a buffer between the duo’s eventual romance. This was a shame since Amber was good for Gregory.
Much likeThe officeS Karen and How I Met Your Mothers titular mother, Amber became another sitcom love interest defined by her wasted potential.
Amber forced the standoffish Gregory to loosen up and her bold demeanor formed a fun contrast with his stiff personality. Amber and Gregory Abbott Elementary Romance could have been great If the series wasn’t already invested in pairing him off with Janine. As it was, the subplot ends up being a holdover. Although Abbott ElementaryJanine’s character growth needed to happen before she could end up with Gregory, Amber was an unfortunate victim of bad timing. So, much like The officeS Karen and How I Met Your Mothers titular mother, Amber became another sitcom love interest defined by her wasted potential.
3
Melissa and Gary
Melissa and Gary’s love story seemed perfect
Melissa and Captain Robinson’s lack of shared screen time was the primary reason their pairing ranked so low on the list, but it would be a lie to say that Melissa’s latest relationship hasn’t cast a shadow over her latest romance. Melissa and Gary the delivery guy shared Abbott Elementarys sweetest romance for some timeHow tough Gary softened up around Melissa and no one else. The slow pace of their courtship and the unconventional nature of Gary’s romantic gestures made this a uniquely sweet sitcom love story, and Melissa’s slow-burn courtship kept a lot of viewers invested.

When Gregory and Janine’s flirting hits another inevitable snag, Melissa and Gary can be relied on to provide a sweet moment or two. However, the couple wanted different things in life. Their divergent plans clashed catastrophically in the season 3 premiere when Gary’s very public proposal ended in an equally public break-up. Although Abbott ElementaryThe most risky episode of season 3 replaced Gary with Captain Robinson, it is still difficult to accept that the romance did not work in the end. Melissa was right to let Gary go, but the plot remains one of Abbott Elementarys saddest storylines.
2
Janine and Tariq
Janine always needed to break up with her first boyfriend
Zach Fox’s Tariq is one of the funniest side characters in Abbott ElementaryBut that doesn’t mean his relationship with Janine is healthy. The anti-drug rapper with few ambitions but plenty of optimistic life goals was always on hand to provide plenty of laughs, but he and Janine shared a comically toxic mismatched dynamic. Janine eventually realized this when she broke up with Tariq in season 1’s finale. Tariq was so popular that he continued to appear in seasons 2 and 4, and he will likely continue to be a presence in Abbott Elementary Season 4’s Janine storyline.
1
Gregory and Janine
Janine and Gregory share the best romantic subplot of Abbott Elementary
As funny as Tariq can be, the best couple of the show was never in question. Abbott ElementaryJanine and Gregory shared one of the best sitcom love stories in recent historyWith their slow-burning romance rivaling Jake and Amy’s relationship in Brooklyn no-noNick and Jess’s Jake and Amy’s dynamic in New girlOr Mindy and Danny’s enemies to lovers plot The Mindy Project. Gregory and Janine are made for each other but their shared caution and sensitive disposition mean the duo are the last to realize it. This resulted in two seasons of growing romantic tension between the pair.
admit, Abbott Elementary Season 3 almost overplayed its hand by keeping the couple apart for so long. Janine and Gregory’s premiere fight felt forced, and they took their time getting together, reducing Josh Segarra’s otherwise promising character Manny To another road block in the way of their relationship. luckily, Abbott ElementarySeason 3 finale made up for that. When Janine and Gregory finally hook up, the couple’s chemistry ensures that the payoff is worth the wait. Abbott Elementary Season 4 just needs to keep its best couple as compelling as ever now that they’re finally officially together.
