Dwayne Johnson reveals he watched it Oppenheimer while he was shooting his new Christmas movie Redand admits that watching Christopher Nolan’s film convinced him that Red required to play in IMAX theaters. Johnson’s new film follows the North Pole’s Chief of Security, who teams up with a bounty hunter after Santa Claus is kidnapped from the North Pole. In addition to Johnson, the cast of Red includes Chris Evans, Lucy Liu and JK Simmons.
Talking to IMAX after the release of RedJohnson discussed his experience watching Nolan’s Best Picture winner Oppenheimer. The actor stated this shortly after watching Oppenheimer, he knew that Red in an IMAX theater would be the best way to watch the Christmas movie. Read Johnson’s full quote below:
With Red One, our intention was to make a film that you could watch on the biggest screen possible. Legitimately, the biggest screens possible are IMAX. I was in the middle of filming Red and I had the opportunity to see Oppenheimer. I watched it at the IMAX cinema where Christopher Nolan watches and shows his films. Him and Emma [Thomas]your wife. I even asked to let me sit where Chris is. They said, ‘Chris sit here.’ I watch Oppenheimer. It was amazing, but I was thinking, ‘Holy shit. Red on this screen and with this technology it could be game over.’ I remember sending messages [director Jake Kasdan] a photo of my bare chest and a photo of the screen and we realized how cool [IMAX] he would be.
What Dwayne Johnson’s Oppenheimer Praise Means for the Red One
Red One and Oppenheimer are very different films
Oppenheimer was considered by many as one of the best, if not the best, theater experiences of 2023. So it’s no surprise that the Cillian Murphy-led film inspired Johnson to want his own film to be shown in IMAX theaters. Originally, Red in fact, it was supposed to be released on the Prime Video streaming service. Like Johnson’s 2021 Netflix Movie Red Warningit was not planned for a theatrical release. However, due to the Hollywood strikes in 2023, Amazon changed its strategy and decided to postpone Red for a year and release it in theaters.
Reviews for Red One were largely negative, with many critics calling it a disappointing holiday film with no chemistry between its two lead actors, Johnson and Evans.
Coupled with delays caused by Hollywood strikes, Johnson’s recent comments suggest he and director Jake Kasdan pushed to get Red in IMAX theaters after seeing Oppenheimer. Unfortunately, it is highly unlikely that Red will be as successful as Oppenheimer. Reviews for Red have been largely negative, with many critics calling it a disappointing holiday film with no chemistry between its two leads, Johnson and Evans. As of this writing, Red it has a score of 34% on Rotten Tomatoes.
Our Take on Oppenheimer’s Praise for Dwayne Johnson
Johnson had a difficult time, but there are promising projects ahead
Dwayne Johnson and Christopher Nolan are not actors and directors that people usually associate with each other. Nolan is a revolutionary and acclaimed filmmaker. Meanwhile, although Johnson is one of the most popular stars in the world, most of his films have been poorly received by critics. Red doesn’t seem likely to break Johnson’s run of poorly reviewed films. However, he has some exciting movies coming upas Moana 2 and Benny Safdie The crushing machine.
