The Bene Gesserit Order is an integral part of the Dune novels by Frank Herbert. Often confused with a religious order, the Bene Gesserit (also known as the Brotherhood) is a ancient organization of spies, theologians and scientists whose mystical origins and greater physical and mental capacity make their existence an integral part of the social order. Although Villeneuve Dune introduced the group and clarified its goals, this was just the beginning and its full extent is yet to be explored.
Original by Herbert Dune the novels paint a more detailed picture of the Bene Gesserit’s enhanced abilities, many of which are given specific names in the canon. These include the strange path, the sense of truth and the methods of prana-bindu. In addition to his unique powers, an overview of his political and social history is of equal importance to understanding his true motives. Paul Atreides appears to be searching for answers, but the Bene Gesserit possess the knowledge to save the human race.
The origins of the Bene Gesserit explained
The Secretive Sisterhood is one of the oldest organizations in the Dune universe
The history of the Bene Gesserit is not as well recorded in the Dune franchise, but the appendix to several revised editions of the first novel clarifies the exact chronology. The group placed agents in all important imperial courts and houses to oversee the negotiations. After the end of the reign of Paul’s son Leto Atreides II, the Brotherhood filled the resulting power vacuum. This role in politics resulted from the members believing it was a way to protect humanity from a tyrant like Leto.
The Bene Gesserit hierarchy

The Bene Gesserit operates on a strictly hierarchical basis with Reverend Mother Superior in superior position. She inherits memories from her predecessors as part of Other Memory. It is this knowledge that is passed on to her successor, whom the Reverend Mother Superior chooses before her death. Mother Kwitsatz is of equal importance, although her role is limited to the breeding program that led to the birth of Kwisatz Haderarch, a male figure considered the “chosen one” to save humanity.
The Reverend Mothers, who have different functions, such as collecting information, building diplomatic relations and raising heirs.
The Bene Gesserit includes Reverend Mothers, who are tasked with different functions such as gathering information, building diplomatic relationships, and raising heirs. What are the goals of the Bene Gesserit?
The Order Exists to Elevate Humanity
Although the Bene Gesserit have ritualistic practices, they are extremely tactical and strategic when it comes to their political goals. ONE The main objective has always been to advance humanity to levels of high intellectualism and stability. This was achieved by ensuring the birth of Dunethe figure of the messiah, Kwisatz Haderach, a title assumed by Paul Atreides. Although the Bene Gesserit’s movements are often precisely calculated, Paul’s birth and rise served as an unexpected obstacle to their plans.
Jessica Atreides intentionally gave birth to Paul instead of a daughter, as the Reverend Mothers had predicted. Because Paul has a son with Chani, a member of the Fremen tribe, their son carries an unpredictable genetic makeup that thwarts the Bene Gesserit’s plans. The Sisterhood realized that it would have to prepare for unprecedented events, such as the emergence of the all-female Honored Matres. To combat this rival group, their new goal was to restore the power they once had.

With the Bene Gesserit introduced in crucial scenes of Dune: Part Onethe sequence increases focus on the end goal of your breeding program, with Paul Atreides taking on his chosen role of Kwisatz Haderach. However, as both of Villeneuve’s films adapt the first Dune novel, there is no space to explore the future of the Bene Gesserit, which changed drastically with Leto’s rise in power. Children of Dune.
The planned prequel series will likely take direct inspiration from the 2012 prequel novel Dune Brotherhood by Bruce Hebert, eldest son of Frank Hebert. The book deals with his challenges after the Butlerian Jihad and should be a fascinating screen adaptation.
Dune: Prophecy expands Bene Gesserit lore
HBO spinoff series focuses on the origins of the Bene Gesserit
After the success of Denis Villeneuve Dune and Dune: Part Two, HBO Moves Forward with Prequel Spin-Off Series Dune: Prophecy, scheduled for release in November 2024. Set thousands of years before the events of Dune, Dune: Prophecy will delve into the origins of the Bene Gesserit, bringing to screen for the first time the early days of the mysterious brotherhood that shaped the universe for millennia.
The story of Dune: Prophecy is mainly based on one of the Dune novels not written by Frank Herbert (although, of course, the original Dune book is still a key piece of inspiration). Instead of, Dune: Prophecy will adapt several events from the 2012 novel by Brian Herbert and Kevin J. Anderson Dune Brotherhood. THE Dune Brotherhood The novel is set a few years after the Butlerian Jihad, many thousands of years before the events of Dune, and chronicles how the Bene Gesserit became the mysterious and impossibly influential organization of which Paul Atreides’ mother, Lady Jessica, was a member.
Dune: Prophecy takes place 10,000 years before Dune, and focuses on sisters Valya and Tula Harkonnen (played by Emily Watson and Olivia Williams, respectively). It is not known exactly how close Dune: Prophecy will follow Dune Brotherhood, although it is already clear that there will be significant changes, as Valya and Tula are far from being central characters in the original novel. The Bene Gesserit are also somewhat established in Dune Brotherhood, while Dune: Prophecy will show the origins of the order, so it probably occurs even earlier in the Dune timeline.
THE Dune: Prophecy The trailer has already established much of what viewers can expect from the prequel spin-off. It shows a world clearly different from Villeneuve’s universe Dune movies, but this also has many similarities. The Bene Gesserit are one of the most mysterious aspects of Dune franchise, and with the surge in popularity created by Villeneuve’s trilogy of films, Dune: Prophecy it’s almost guaranteed to be a highly appreciated addition to the screen world, adapted from Frank Herbert’s original novel.
