Although Future Trunks became powerful and successfully protected his future for a time, he often felt the weight of others’ expectations, especially his father, Vegeta, whose approval he seemed to crave. When Future Trunks is reintroduced in Dragon Ball Superit becomes clear that the burdens of his past haunt him in the battle against Zamasu and Goku Black. Future Trunks Questions His Purpose as he faces his most dangerous enemies and comes to a profound understanding that awakens his most powerful form yet.
Future Trunks only faced Vegeta once, and it wasn’t out of bravery
Future Trunks questioned his father’s actions to protect the present
Future Trunks’ relationship with Vegeta has always been mixed with admiration and frustration. Having grown up in a world without his father, Trunks only had stories of Vegeta passed down by Gohan and Bulma. He marveled at Vegeta’s resilient and proud nature and went out of his way to gain his approval. However, although he admired his father’s tenacity, Trunks was also angered by Vegeta’s recklessness. but for the most part he was unwilling to intervene.
The only exception came when Trunks finally faced Vegeta in episode #159 of Dragon Ball Zwhen he hit him with a blast of energy and sent him landing in the middle of the ocean. However, was not moved by courage but rather the opposite; it was his fear of Cell’s potential that led him to confront Vegeta. It was little more than a reactionary act fueled by his desperation and fear of Cell’s perfect form that led Trunks to act against Vegeta.
Zamasu’s critical words to future Trunks serve as a catalyst for his power
Upon facing Zamasu’s accusations, Future Trunks unleashed his full potential with Super Saiyan rage.
However, Trunks’ growth is on full display during his return in Dragon Ball Super when he, Vegeta and Goku face Zamasu and Goku Black. At the end of episode #61 of Dragon Ball SuperZamasu and Goku Black mercilessly knock Trunks down, accusing him of being little more than a vile sinner who defied the natural order interfering with a time machine. They claimed that his time travel proved to be deadly hubris and blamed him for every occurrence that happened since then, trying to make him feel responsible for the chaos and every death that followed.
The accusations deeply affected Future Trunks, and he argues that he spent his entire life defending people. Even so, he reaches a point where he realizes that he cannot afford to live in the shadow of other people’s judgments. Zamasu and Goku Black’s twisted sense of justice and outrageous claims pushed Trunks to his limit. With pure defiance and anger, he shouted, “You say my choices make me evil? Then that’s what I will be.” At that moment, Trunks sets aside his need for validation and remains steadfast in his beliefsregardless of any labels others may impose on him.
This change in Trunks’ character serves as a catalyst for his transformation into Super Saiyan Rage. Zamasu and Goku Black’s attempt to shame him into submission and despair did the opposite and freed him from his insecurities and desire for everyone’s approval. In Dragon Ball ZTrunks’ convictions were destroyed every time Vegeta called him weak or when Cell denounced his defects. Still, his return in Dragon Ball Super allowed him to grow beyond the opinions of others and embrace your role as a warrior who protects those he loves.
Future Trunks’ Super Saiyan Rage Reflects His Inner Growth and Strength
Trunks realizes that Goku Black and Zamasu don’t dictate his reality
Super Saiyan Rage became a reflection of Future Trunks’ growth, a product of his defiance and anger in response to Zamasu’s accusations. This form is exclusive to the anime and Future Trunksbeing perhaps the most unique in the franchise, especially because it is not triggered by training or an outburst of anger, but rather by the character’s growth. The harsh judgment and claims that Zamasu makes on Trunks are the trigger that allows him to channel his energy into a form that shows his resilience and determination to defend his timeline on his own terms.
With Super Saiyan Rage, Trunks fully embraces his strength and accepts the fact that he has done everything in his power to protect those he loves. Unlike his previous struggles to prove his worth, Trunks’ transformation signifies his commitment to his own beliefseven when faced with the wrath of a god. He sets aside the need for validation from the father he never had growing up and instead focuses on his own beliefs. His transformation into Super Saiyan Rage in Dragon Ball Super serves as a testament to Future Trunks’ journey in realizing his true strength and purpose.
