Dragon Ball Daima might be a better anime, but I’ll always prefer GT for a reason

Many fans understandably appreciate how Dragon Ball GT is not actually canon for the franchise (despite controversial statements from Shueisha and Toriyama), mainly because of the widely criticized Black Star Dragon Ball Saga. So when Dragon Ball Daima emerged as essentially GTofficial replacement, it was no surprise to me that many of those same fans rejoiced. And now the fact that Dragon Ball Daima clearly presented in terms of superior animation, dialogue, and character interactions has already effectively sealed the deal for many of those fans.

However, in terms of the overall story, DaimaThe current arc is clearly a reinterpretation of GTof Dragon Ball Dark Star Saga. And I can say that with confidence I still prefer GT for a reason, and that is why of your team. Although GT clearly failed in terms of execution, It was the potential of the GT team that was so promisingand so far, Goku main crew in Daima couldn’t get over it. In other words, the promising dynamic between Goku, Panzy, Supreme Kai and Glorio does not live up to the expectations that could have come from those who Goku traveled during GTBlack Star Dragon Ball Saga, adult Trunks and Pan.

Pan and Adult Trunks actually had previous stories with Goku in Dragon Ball GT

The GT team dynamic was built on more solid ground

When GT began, fans only knew that Goku would be traveling with the next generations of his and Vegeta’s legacies. From Goku’s perspective, he was paired with not only his granddaughter, but also the first female Saiyan. Now, the prospect of that isn’t as exciting today, especially since the introduction of Universe 6’s Caulifla and Kale, whose dynamic is arguably one of the best in the franchise.

Furthermore, Pan’s big debut in Dragon Ball Super: Super Hero was clearly overshadowed by Beast Gohan and Orange Piccolo, so the prospect of another Pan story isn’t all that exciting. But back then, the possibilities were endless. And part of what made this dynamic so exciting was how Goku becoming a child would alter his previous relationship with Pan. Pan now had to interact with a man who was once the patriarch of the family, but who suddenly seemed more like a brother or cousin.

Adult Trunks was also a promising prospect, not just because he was Vegeta’s son, but because viewers can now compare him to his obvious counterpart, Future Trunks. In fact, fans still haven’t seen what this could look like in the world of Dragon Ball Superso there’s still some relevance there to this day. As Vegeta’s son, fans got the chance to see how this version of Trunks would interact with his father’s rival, especially now that Goku was in this highly compromised state. Thus, Goku’s interactions with Pan and Adult Trunks were already promising in GT just because of all your stories understood and shared.

Goku’s past relationship with Supreme Kai doesn’t make up for Panzy and Glorio’s lack of baggage

Although it is easier to agree with the criticism that GT I never ended up delivering in that capacity, Dragon Ball Daimathe current crew doesn’t even present any of the same possibilities. In truth, two of Goku’s companions have no prior relationships with him to build onnamely Glorio and Panzy. The closest connection they have to Goku is that they are Majin just like Buu, but they, as well as every other Majin Goku has met, are nothing like Buu, so the correlation is in name only. They could very well be just another race. And while Panzy is arguably a very well-written character, only Glorio presents any potential conflict, as established by the Supreme Kai’s obvious distrust of him.

The only lasting relationship in DaimaGoku’s new team is between Goku and Supreme Kai, and There’s certainly nothing exciting in your past to build on. Plus, their dynamic hasn’t even changed since Supreme Kai became a child. It can’t even be argued that the Supreme Kai’s superiority over Goku was put at risk as a result of this. Supreme Kai gave up trying to be an authority figure a long time ago and Goku never truly respected him.

Dragon Ball GT’s homages to the franchise are more complete than Dragon Ball Daima’s attempts

A super weak Dragon Ball fighter has power that Goku will never have.

Another reason fans love it Dragon Ball Daima serves to reinterpret famous moments or characters from the franchise. Unfortunately, many critics GT they didn’t realize that the Black Star Dragon Ball Saga did the same and more completely than Daima so far, basing entire episodes on them. One of the most direct tributes that GT done in the original series was how episode 7 directly reinterpreted Goku’s first deal with Oolong in chapter 5 of Dragon Ball.

About that, Daima only made brief allusions to previous moments Dragon Balllike the way Panzy’s father followed the Ox King’s example, offering his daughter’s hand in marriage to Goku. I think the fans who are celebrating Daimahomages to the first moments of the franchise should perhaps be revisited GT discover that the much-maligned series also did a lot to remember and honor the franchise’s past.

But the most important thing is that even though some fans were happy when Dragon Ball Daima began to erase Dragon Ball GT, it is important to highlight that, although GTWhile the overall execution may have been shaky, it’s impossible to say that there aren’t any incredible aspects of the controversial series that aren’t loved by fans. Undoubtedly, the biggest example of this is the iconic Super Saiyan 4 transformation and, by extension, the Great Golden Ape. These additions are so popular, in fact, that they have been included in most of the franchise’s media, particularly the video games.

Just as it can be said that, despite many promising elements, Dragon Ball GT was harmed by its execution, to the extent Dragon Ball Daimathe perfect execution of is not enough to make it necessarily better than Dragon Ball GTespecially for fans like me who chose to focus on the latter’s merits rather than obsessing over its flaws.

Dragon Ball DAIMA is the fifth series overall in the action-adventure anime franchise. It features most of the classic cast members as aged versions of themselves, including Goku, Vegeta, and Bulma. The series was announced at NYCC 2023, with creator Akira Toriyama returning to manage DAIMA.
