Dragon Ball Daima confirms that Goku's best character arc began long before we knew it

Warning: Contains spoilers for episode five of Dragon Ball Daima.Dragon Ball Daima It's only a few episodes in, but it's already retelling plot points from Dragon Ball Super and other parts of the franchise. Some were small, like the reveal of Namekians being demons, which was already teased in the Dragon Ball Super manga, but others had much larger implications for the story, such as completely changing how Kibito Kai split back into Shin and Kibito.

Dragon Ball Daimaretcons have varied greatly in severity, and Goku is not exempt from this either. Although Goku's character has remained largely static since Dragon Ball Zthe last stages Dragon Ball Super gave Goku an ongoing character arc for the first time in decades, but in a surprise twist, Dragon Ball Daima episode five revealed that Goku's character arc began chronologically much earlier Dragon Ball Super. No matter how unexpected a change may be, it only helps to make Dragon ballThe story is better, and that makes it great to watch.

Dragon Ball Daima is the true beginning of Goku's best character arc

Panzy talks to Goku as they walk.

At the end of Dragon Ball Super: Brolywhen Goku finally got the chance to formally introduce himself to Broly, he introduced himself as Goku and Kakarot. Goku had always rejected his Saiyan heritage up to that point, so just that brief sentence implied a lot about his potential growth, and the Granolah the Survivor saga followed with Goku finally learning about Bardock and accepting the few positive aspects of being a Saiyan. Dragon Ball Super gave Goku an arc about accepting his Saiyan heritageand it was a great way to give Goku some much-needed depth.

Goku's arc about accepting his Saiyan heritage is great, but surprisingly, it didn't start in Dragon Ball Super: Broly. In Dragon Ball Daima episode #5, when Panzy said that Goku's name was strange, his next response was that his other name was Kakarot; Dragon Ball Daimathe official timeline puts it three years earlier Dragon Ball Superso if Goku is already willing to call himself Kakarot, does that mean Dragon Ball Daima is claiming that Goku's arc of acceptance of his Saiyan heritage actually began years before he met Brolyprobably sometime after defeating Kid Buu.

Why Dragon Ball Daima's Latest Super Retcon Makes Sense

Dragon Ball Daima's latest retcon is good for the franchise

A common criticism of Goku telling Broly to call him Kakarot was that it seemed abrupt for him to say something like that, but if Goku was changing his Saiyan heritage years before that, then Broly and everything in Dragon Ball Super the manga is an extension of what Goku was already working on, as opposed to something that came out of nowhere. Goku is already learning to accept his Saiyan heritage in Dragon Ball Daima makes your bow in Dragon Ball Super feel more organicSo as far as retcons go, it's great to have.

The retcon has its problems, of course. Originally, it could have been assumed that meeting Broly made Goku want to embrace his Saiyan heritage, but there was nothing relative to that. Daimatimeline that would make Goku do this, so Goku showing signs of embracing his Saiyan heritage in Dragon Ball Daima still has the problem of feeling quite abrupt. That bit of clumsiness doesn't stop it from being a good change, however, and as Dragon Ball Daima continues, this certainly won't be the last time this changes Dragon Ball Super and other parts of the franchise for the better.
