Dragon Age: The Veilguard – The best mage build

Mages are powerful sorcerers who take advantage of the Fade to gain their abilities in Dragon Age: The Veil Guard. With the deep customization options available, players can build their Mage Rook for various playstyles. Mages in Dragon Age: The Veil Guard don’t necessarily start out as strong as their Rogue or Warrior counterparts. However, their combat prowess increases as the story progresses, making them a rewarding choice over time. They are also incredibly effective in both melee and ranged combat, with a lot of versatility in their kits.

There are three Mage Specializations available in Dragon Age: The Veil Guardunlocked at level 20. These are Deathcaller, Summoner and Magicblade. Only one specialization can be selected at a time. There are nearly infinite combinations that players can create for their unique Rook builds, but the best choice for group synergy and to avoid duplicating a damage type with other companions centers around Mage Rook becoming a Spellblade.

Best Spellblade build for a Mage Tower

Fire meets lightning

THE best Mage build in Dragon Age: The Veil Guard focuses on the Spellblade specialization and the fire and storm abilities that surround him. In general, this build prioritizes melee combat with the Mage’s Knife and Orb, but includes long-range attacks to eliminate multiple enemies at once or trigger combos with party members. The active skills in this build are:

  • Meteor
  • Void Blade
  • Chain of Lightning
  • Ultimate: Thundering End

As it may take a while to access Void Blade and Thundering Endplayers can start the game with Wall of Fire and the standard Destructive Light until they unlock the chosen specialization.

Players must prioritize collecting Chain of Lightning and Wall of Fire as quickly as possible into combat at the start of the game. They can then work their way down the Sustain section of the Skill Tree until they can pick up Meteor and through the Antivan Crow section of the Skill Tree to pick up Storm and approach the specialization point for Spellblades.

It might also be a good idea to go up to the Control section of the Skill Tree during the beginning of the game to get the New Frostwhich works similarly to Cone of Cold in the previous Dragon Age games to freeze enemies that get too close, giving Rook the chance to move away. Several passives in the Control section give access to greater reserves of Mana, Staff Energy, and Health, which may be worth prioritizing if Rook feels weak early in the game.

Finally, although the Mourn Watch section of the Skill Tree is largely ignored in this build, it’s a good idea to head that way to some nodes to pick up the Channeled thoughts Feature. This ability allows Rook to regenerate Mana while defending by pressing the Light Attack button, which is mandatory for longer fights that deplete Mana for longer periods of time and can allow Rook to essentially spam Void Blade later in the game. THE Degrade Nearby Greater Passive is also a decent gain, as it increases damage against enemies that suffer a status effect or prepared for a detonation combo.

In general, with any class in Dragon Age: The Veil GuardPicking up all the basic skills available, those found in the center of the skill tree, is a good idea no matter what build you run. For a Mage, these appear in the table below:

Ability

Section

Type

Effect

Carrying Spirit

Essential

Biggest Liability

Staff Energy is generated passively when you are not in combat.

Mind Blast

Essential

Feature

While defending, consume 50 Mana to release a Shockwave in all directions. Deals damage based on your equipped Staff.

Fast recovery

Essential

Biggest Liability

Mana Regeneration resets 25% faster when paused by spending Mana or taking damage.

Faded Attack

Essential

Feature

Use your speed to unleash a powerful attack with any weapon after using Fade Step. Also unlocks an additional follow-up attack while dashing, but only for orb attacks.

Fall

Essential

Biggest Liability

Jump attacks grant critical hits if the target is knocked down.

Deadly Concentration

Essential

Feature

Holding your attack at range gradually increases its damage output the longer it is active, up to a maximum of three seconds.

Most Traits, abilities indicated by hexes in the Skill Tree, are also incredibly useful, as they tend to reinforce the Mage’s innate abilities, such as ranged attacks or Fade Step. It’s also good to prioritize them.

Players should plan to respec Rook once they reach level 20 and beyond. At that point, they can unlock Spellblade as their specialization and acquire the remaining active skills needed to complete this build.

Best Party for a Mage Build

Create powerful combos with multiple companions

Dragon Age The Veilguard Lucanis skill tree

This particular Mage build has good synergy with Rogues in Dragon Age: The Veil GuardHarding and Lucanis. Chain of Lightning can prepare Lucanis’ Eviscerate skill, and both Meteor and Empty Knife can combine with Harding Destroy. Davrin is also a great choice, as his War cry can be used to draw enemies towards you and keep pressure on Rook and Harding or Lucanis, leaving them open for ranged attacks.

The Spellblade Specialization helps give Rook the most versatility on the team. Three fellow Mages are Neve Gallus, Bellara Lutare, and Emmerich Volkarin. While Bellara’s abilities are quite unique, Neve’s appear to be Evoker and Emmerich’s appear to be Death Caller. Because of this, Mage players who choose one of these two Specializations may have a harder time taking Neve or Emmerich on missions, as combat can feel redundant and the repeated damage types can put the party at a disadvantage against enemies with resistances.

Other good wizard builds

Endless combinations to try

A Rook Mage casts the Evoker Entropic Sphere spell in Dragon Age: The Veilguard

There are many other great ways to build a Magic Tower in Dragon Age: The Veil Guard. Some other options for each specialization include:

  • Summoner: Entropic Sphere, Chain Lightning, Dark Gust, Ultimate: Shadow Vortex
  • Magic Bladee: Void Blade, Wall of Fire, Storm, Ultimate: Thundering End
  • Death Caller: Frozen Nova, Corrupted Ground, Spirit Bomb, Ultimate: The Crypt’s Herald

On my first playthrough Dragon Age: The Veil GuardI chose Evoker to match my chosen faction of Shadow Dragons. This was quite fun for a while, especially when combining skills like Entropic Sphere with Taash Dragon Fire Strike and Bellara Galvanized tear. Ultimately, Dragon Age: The Veil Guardof The combat system encourages players to experiment and discover what suits their play style best, so it’s worth trying out a few builds and finding out what makes combat the most fun and engaging for you.
