Following BioWare’s signature storytelling method, Dragon Age: The Veil Guard often presents players with important choices that can have important effects on the story later on. As players approach the end of the game, the consequences of these decisions can lead to drastically different outcomes. THE decisions can have a big impact on companion approvalquest rewards and, in some cases, even deciding the overall fate of certain characters, so knowing in advance what the consequences are can help players tailor their game to their liking.
One of these decisions in Guard of the Veil is introduced as part of a late-game main quest, “The Siege of Weisshaupt”, where Rook has to decide how to deal with the First Warden of the Gray Wardens. Throughout the rest of the game up to this point, the First Warden has been consistently antagonistic towards Rook, leading to the confrontation in this mission where the party has to deal with him before moving on. Here, players have to make one of two choices – either knocking out the First Warden and bypassing him by force or trying to reason with him peacefully.
What happens if you knock out the first director
Knocking out the first director gets the approval of most of Rook’s companions
The first option, and undoubtedly the most emotionally satisfying, is to simply knock out the First Director, repaying him for the problems he caused throughout the game. In general, This is seen positively by the companions, earning great approval from everyone except Bellara and Emmrich.who will instead strongly disapprove. Other than the partner’s approval, however, the consequences of this choice are relatively minimal. “The Siege of Weisshaupt” will end similarly with either option, and the decision to knock out the First Director mainly affects the tone of the story moments in which he is involved.
At the end of “The Siege of Weisshaupt”, for example, after the party has lured the Archdemon Razikale into a trap, the First Warden will appear again and attempt to kill the dragon himself for the sake of his personal glory. Later in the game, in the mission “The Unholy and the Lost”, the First Warden is encountered again, now corrupted by the Plague. If he was knocked out, the First Warden will become delirious when found here, believing he is still in Weisshaupt, and Davrin will put him out of his misery.
What happens if you argue with the first director
Reasoning with the first director is the best option for Bellara and Emmrich
Arguing with the First Warden is the most peaceful option, but it may not be as satisfying for players who have been irritated by having to put up with the First Warden thus far. Fortunately, there is no possibility of failing to convince him, and taking this option will result in him becoming an ally, but unfortunately it also leads to a major loss of approval from all companions besides Bellara and Emmrich. Reasoning with the First Warden is a valuable choice for players who wish to romance either of the two, as it gets great approval from both.
In addition to the companion’s approval, the consequences of reasoning with the First Director are similar to knocking him out, just with a difference in tone. At the end of “The Siege of Weisshaupt”, he will still appear before the fight with Razikale, but instead of seeking his own glory, he will be looking for the opportunity to atone for his past mistakes. When encountered later in “The Profane and the Lost”, similarly, he will still be corrupted and trapped by Blight, but will be fully lucid, and Davrin will still kill the First Warden out of mercy.
Which first choice director is the best?
None of the choices have drastic consequences for the rest of the game
Generally speaking, knocking out the First Director is the best choicebecause he gains the approval of his companions more than he argues with them. For players who wish to successfully romance Bellara or Emmrich, however, the opposite is true, and reasoning with the First Warden should take precedence. Any other consequences of this choice only affect the overall tone of the later scenes in which the First Warden appears and do not change the overall direction of the story or even any aspects of the game, so Players who aren’t trying to play with any specific teammate’s approval can just do whatever they feel is right.
While dealing with the First Warden in whatever way the player sees fit can be a satisfying time, it is far from one of the Guard of the VeilIt is the most consequential choice and serves mainly as a way to increase the approval of certain companions. Players who like to take their RPG more seriously may lean toward one option or another, but neither will greatly affect how the overarching narrative of Dragon Age: The Veil Guard throw it away.
