Dragon Age: The Veilguard – Pinnacle of Its Kind Quest Walkthrough

There are many awesome monsters to fight Dragon Age: The Veil Guardbut few are as imposing as the beast you’ll encounter at the end of the “Pinnacle of Its Kind” quest. RPGs are full of bad decisions to make in the name of adventure, and any completionist will tell you that there’s nothing wrong with breaking into a locked door. There are just consequences for breaking down some of these doors.

You’ll find this quest in the Necropolis Halls, where you’ll pick up Emmrich for the first time after finishing the “Restless Spirit” quest. This is a step in Emmrich’s companion quest that you will need to do if you are interested in romancing the necromancer. It’s also a good way to get extra XP and level up quickly, so it’s a good idea to do it anyway. After getting the quest, you will go hunting demons.

Opening the door to the necropolis

Defeat demons in Dock Town, Arlathan Forest and Hossberg Wetlands

The coffin with a note next to it in the necropolis

After starting the quest, you will need to investigate the sealed room. On the north side of the room, there are some coffins with a dead man lying propped up in one; Next to the dead man is a letter that will tell you that before you can open the giant, mysterious door, you will need to hunt down some demons. There are three demons in Thedas who keep this door sealed, so it’s up to you and your team to defeat them before you can enter.

The Demon of Dock City

To find the demon in Dock Town, go to the Spillway Beacon, which is in the southeast part of the map. As with most missions in Veilguard, a quest marker appears on the map, so you shouldn’t have any problems finding the demon. You’ll find a stone brazier with a green flame at the end of some stairs; interact with it to summon a demon called “The Formless.”

This demon mainly uses electricity-based AoE attacks to knock you down, so be careful to avoid them. This demon is weak to Necrosis, meaning both Lucanis and Emmrich will be useful here. After avoiding the demon’s attacks and taking them down, you must go to the Arlathan Forest, where another demon awaits you.

The Forest Demon Arlathan

Once you arrive in Arlathan Forest, go to the Nameless building on the west side of the region. On the way west, you will find the second brazier, lit once again with green flame. Interact with it just like you did in Dock Town. To summon the second demon, you will need to fight.

Snow will be a useful companion here, but you can also refund your skill points as Rook to quickly respec.

This demon uses fire attacks and is, predictably, weak to cold damage. Either way, use a combination of cold damage and your own regular attacks to eliminate the demon while avoiding the rings of flame it releases. You’ll find that each of these three demonic fights takes place in relatively confined areas; Keep your wits about you to avoid the demons’ persistent attacks. After defeating the second demon, your last target will be waiting for you at the Hossberg Wetlands.

The Hossberg Wetland Demon

The last demon on your list is in Solitude’s Edge, in the southern part of the Wetlands. There will be Darkspawn lurking around the area when you arrive; It’s a good idea to eliminate them completely before interacting with the brazier so you don’t get overwhelmed. When you’re ready to fight, interact with the final brazier and face the third demon.

This last demon also summons some Shadows with it, so keep an eye on the demon as you take them out first. Once all the smaller enemies are dispatched, focus on the demon. It is weak to Shock, making Bellara the best choice as a companion for this particular battle. This demon has a super annoying, long-lasting spin attack that deals massive, devastating damage if you get caught by it. Try not to get cornered; you should have no problem dealing with this final enemy.

Defeat the Formless

This massive, draconic enemy is not for the faint of heart

After defeating all three demons, you must return to the sealed door in the Necropolis Halls, which should now open for you. Open it and you’ll reveal that The Formless One has found a final, powerful host to control: the corpse of a dragon. In my opinion, this enemy is one of the coolest in the game.

Formless One’s dragon form is level 40, so make sure you’re prepared before facing him. I don’t like fights where I’m under-leveled, so I didn’t do this fight until I was 40, but you should be able to do it at level 30 if you don’t want to wait. If you are having difficulty, you can always lower the difficulty or view June Guides‘video on YouTube.

The Formless is weak to Necrosis, so once again, bring Emmrich and Lucanis with you as you pick up any Necrosis abilities your Tower may have in its skill tree. Wizards in particular have a few Necrosis abilities available to them, but any class should have one or two at level 40. The Formless Dragon is a fearsome opponent. Here are the attacks you should watch out for:

Attack

Effect

long range beam

The Dragon will use a breath attack. It is telegraphed by the Dragon retreating, then extending its head forward to fire lightning bolts.

dive bomb

The dragon will glow a sort of red, which indicates that it is about to attack you. You will need to time your dodge well to avoid this attack.

trample

The Dragon hits you with its hands.

Slide the tail

The Dragon spins, hitting you with its tail; dodge in the direction the attack is coming from to follow up with your own attack.

Bite

The Dragon moves forward to bite you.

Earth pound

A large red circle will appear around Rook, telegraphing the attack. The time between the telegraph and the attack itself is relatively short, so dodge quickly.

The Dragon’s simpler attacks are very easy to avoid, and the more difficult ones aren’t too bad either. As you dodge, keep an eye on the dragon’s legs. One of them will be glowing, although which leg is glowing may change. This is the Dragon’s weak point, so focus your attacks here to stun it.

At around 70% health, the Dragon will retreat and place a barrier, shooting lightning at you from the other side of the arena. After dodging the lightning for a while, he will emit a huge blast of lightning around you, so watch closely as you continue to bombard him with attacks. Eventually, you will defeat him and earn lots of rewards in exchange for your big win.

Rewards at the top of their kind

XP, chests and even part of the secret ending

After defeating the Formless One, the demon will be sealed again. You’ll receive some rewards right away and also have access to some chests around the arena. The rewards that appear are 1,000 XP, one Dragon’s Tooth, two Dragonfire Catalysts, and +200 Wail Ward Strength and +300 Fortune Lord Strength.

Around the arena, you should find a Unique Chest. These are chests that contain unique items, which are essentially unique weapons and armor that provide huge bonuses or excellent effects. You will also win the “Unbound” Trophy and a souvenir in one of the side rooms called “A Second Circle”. Not only will this souvenir help you upgrade your workshop, but it will also be needed for the secret ending of Dragon Age: The Veilguard.
