Mythal is one of the ancient elven gods and former companion of Solas. She worked with Elgar’nan and Gilhan’nain before the fall of the Titans to free them from the Titans’ rule, but when it came time to form an elven society after their rebellion, Elgar’nan and Gilhan’nain chose to become tyrannical leaders rather than create a society of peace. Mythal sided with the two against Solas’s pleas; in his desperation to stop them, Solas killed her to gain the power needed to trap the Evanuris behind the Veil. A piece of a now-fragmented Mythal survives at the Crossroads, and this is the Mythal that players encounter.

Where to find Mythal

Follow Solas’ memories to Mythal’s resting place

After collecting all the wolf figurines in the “Regrets of the Dire Wolf” questline and viewing Solas’ memories, players will have learned a little about the relationship between Mythal and Fen’harel. There she will reveal that along with the broken piece of Mythal at the Crossroads another piece resides within it, as do countless other hosts over time.

Morrigan tells you that having Mythal’s favor will be a great advantage in the fight against the Evanuris. However, to gain this power, you will need to talk to her. After revealing all this, Morrigan will open a path nearby that leads to a hidden area of the Crossroadshome to what little remains of Mythal’s spirit.

Morrigan will warn you that while the piece of Mythal that lives in her has been tempered over the years by the sensitivity of her mortal hosts, the part of her that you will talk to has had no such temper. This means that the level of morality Mythal operates at is not the same as a mortal’s, so you will need to speak to her carefully to avoid conflict. If you can’t do this, you will find yourself facing Mythal’s Retribution.

Fighting Mythal blocks you Guard of the VeilIt’s the secret ending, so if you’re looking for the best ending in the game but still want to challenge Mythal, maybe save the scum before the fight and reload after defeating them.

How to beat Mythal’s Retribution

Defeat Mythal to gain his essence

The essence of Mythal, a small blue statue vaguely sculpted to resemble a woman dressed in a crown

Mythal’s Retribution takes the form of a giant level 45 lightning dragon, and she is weak to Necrotic and resistant to Lightning. If you’re running a Reaper build, this will be your time to shine. When fighting this fearsome foe, you’ll want at least Lucanis or Emmrich with you, if not both, to take advantage of the elemental clash. Suppose one source of necrotic damage is enough for you. In that case, you’ll want your second companion to be able to prepare and/or detonate their own or your party’s abilitiesso make sure you have good class coverage when choosing your group.

Mythal has many attacks throughout his fight, though none should be too surprising after the dragons you’ve already faced. Her moves remain pretty consistent, but she adds some new ones at around 60% HP, while also summoning living axes to attack you and your party.

Phase 1

Attack

Tip

Lightning Shot

The ground beneath Rook will flash blue quickly, giving you a small window to dodge before lightning strikes. Keep moving to avoid getting hit. Occasionally, she rises into the air and fires several shots before landing again.

Kick

Although behind a dragon is one of the safest places to be, you can still be attacked. Watch out for her back legs kicking you whenever you get too close to them. This also applies to the front feet, but once you’re up there, you have other things to worry about.

Earth pound

Mythal’s Retribution will briefly fly into the air and then fall back down to damage a large area. Time your dodge to avoid damage here, or run as soon as you see it rise.

Facial pounding

Mythal swings his massive head at the ground, slamming into anything in his path. This one is pretty telegraphed, so be careful with the side lunge before lowering your head.

Charge

Mythal will shake his head once and then move forward a few steps. If you’re in the way, this will knock you down, but it feels more like a repositioning maneuver than a high-damage attack.

Phase 2 (~60% HP)

Perched atop a cliff, Mythal will fire lightning at you before moving on to the second phase.)

Attack

Tip

Spectral Warriors

Calling the power of lightning to his side, Mythal summons armored enemies that stick to the edges of the arena. If you don’t approach them, they seem to leave you alone.

Breath attack

Mythal will fire a beam in a motion from one side to the other on the battlefield. This attack is telegraphed by a shake of her head as she gathers energy into her mouth, which will glow purple-blue.

Phase 3 (~40% HP)

Mythal returns to the cliff to fire more lightning.

Lightning storm

This attack only occurs while Mythal is on the cliffside, but she will stir up a large storm. This affects most of the battlefield; your best place to dodge is right below it, near the cliff. Push yourself against the side to avoid damage.

Lightning arrows

Lightning arrows fall in a small circle in the area, easily avoidable as long as you see them in time.

As is typical of dragons, whichever of its legs is glowing is the weak point of Mythal’s Retribution. This can change as the fight progresses, so keep an eye on her as you attack to deal some extra damage. Your true moment to shine will come when you have Mythal reeling; she will fall to the ground, leaving a brief opening to deal some juicy damage.

Depending on the class and specialization you chose, this fight will take different paths. However, no matter which class you choose, the best time to unleash all the damage will be during the staggered phase. Drop your Ultimate, as well as any precision damage you may have, on the weak point that is revealed when Mythal is down.

Rewards for defeating Mythal’s Retribution

An exclusive chest and material rewards

A pale reflection amulet from Dragon Age The Veilguard

While Mythal won’t come to help in your fight against the Returning Dragon, you will receive some pretty cool rewards for taking down his draconic form. In addition to the usual gold, XP, and materials you get from defeating bosses, defeating Mythal’s Retribution will lead you to an exclusive chest containing the “A pale reflection“amulet. You will also be able to collect Mythal essence, which will help you in a later fight.

This amulet is interesting because it allows you to consider all base-level enemies to be low on health, and then gives you a buff against low-health enemies. Additionally, you will gain ultimate charge from killing enemies, allowing you to activate it more often. Whether you use it or not, you’ll have yet another unique thing in your back pocket, along with the essence of one of the most powerful gods in the world. Dragon Age: The Veilguard.
