Avengers: Judgment Day is shaping up to be one of the biggest releases the Marvel Cinematic Universe has ever had, and it could feature two very distinct roles for its biggest stars. The MCU hasn't seen the release of a new Avengers film since 2019, when Avengers: Endgame It broke all box office records and ended the Infinity Saga with a bang. After that, Marvel faced problems with its Multiverse saga. Although films like Spider-Man: No Way Home made the list of the best MCU films, overall, this chapter of the franchise felt directionless.
To fix this, the MCU's Avengers movies are making a big comeback. Avengers: Judgment Day sees a new Avengers team assembled in 2026while 2027 Avengers: Secret Wars puts an end to the Multiverse Saga. Big stars will be part of the films, which are expected to include MCU players and actors from Marvel's entire live-action history, thanks to the multiverse. It has just been reported that Chris Evans has joined the cast of Avengers: Judgment Day. For now, the actor's role remains a secret, although the MCU has already shown how it could be different from Robert Downey Jr.
Robert Downey Jr. is the new main villain of the Multiverse saga
Kang the conqueror is out of the picture
Chris Evans' Avengers return makes him the second original MCU team member to be confirmed for Avengers: Judgment DayIt's cast. The first was the star who started the MCU, Robert Downey Jr., who will not play a version of Iron Man in Avengers: Judgment Daybut Doctor Doom. When he was announced as the villain, it was said that Downey would play the classic Victor von Doom version of the character. Doctor Doom is the new main villain of the Multiverse Saga, as well as the franchise moved on from Kang the Conqueror after Jonathan Majors was fired by Marvel.
Chris Evans, like RDJ's case with Doctor Doom, has also returned to the MCU since Avengers: Endgame in a different role. However, his case was a little different. Evans was one of the stars of Deadpool and Wolverinewhere the actor did not play Captain America, but Johnny Storm from the Fantastic Four. Notably, Evans played the Human Torch in the 2000s Fantastic Four films, with the hero being his first Marvel role years before becoming Captain America. After following a similar path to Downey in his return to the MCU, Evans Avengers: Judgment Day the role may be very different from that of the RDJ.
Chris Evans' original Captain America could return in Avengers: Judgment Day
Avengers: Endgame already showed how this could happen
Avengers: Endgame kicked out three of the MCU's original Avengers. Both Robert Downey Jr.'s Iron Man and Scarlett Johansson's Black Widow sacrificed themselves so the other heroes could defeat Thanos and bring back to life those he snapped from existence. However, Chris Evans' Captain America is not dead. Instead, the hero chose to go back in time and live his life with Peggy Carter in the past. The last time he was seen in the main MCU timeline, Steve Rogers was an old man passing his shield to Sam Wilson.
Since then, the MCU has shown how characters believe Captain America is either dead or on the moon, although no concrete information has emerged either way. As such, Steve Rogers should still be alive, just old, in the MCU. Avengers: Endgame featured a sequence where the heroes were discovering time travel. In it, Ant-Man Accidentally Aged, Becoming a Child. The moment shows how the MCU could bring back Chris Evans as its original Captain America in Avengers: Judgment Day. Heroes could rejuvenate him, with Evans as his MCU hero while RDJ plays a new villain.
How Marvel Comics Showed Captain America Could Work for Evans' Return
Steve Rogers would be a great addition no matter what the conditions
Marvel Comics has already shown how the MCU could lower the age of Chris Evans' Captain America to Avengers: Judgment Day with an exciting story. In it, the villain Iron Nail manages to drain Steve Rogers of Super Soldier Serumcausing him to quickly age to the age he should have been. Later, a sentient piece of the Cosmic Cube – the MCU's Tesseract – called Kobik restored Steve Rogers to his original state when he was about to be killed by Crossbones when the villains who had been erased by Maria Hill's Pleasant Hill initiative regained their memories. and all hell broke loose.

Even though Captain America aged, before this happened, he was still a huge asset to Marvel's heroes. Old Steve Rogers became one of the leaders of SHIELD. Avengers: Judgment Day could present him in both roles. Chris Evans could start as the older Steve, helping to organize the new Avengers, the Guardians of the Galaxy, the Thunderbolts and any other characters who band together to defeat Doctor Doom. So Doom may have the upper hand and create Battleworld, making the heroes need Steve back as Captain America, with Avengers: Judgment Day ending with a young Steve Rogers again.
Avengers: Doomsday is the fifth Avengers film in the Marvel Cinematic Universe and will bring together heroes, new and old, to face Victor von Doom – played by the returned Robert DOwney Jr.. Avengers 5 will also mark the beginning of phase 6 of the MCU.
