A potential Miami Vice Reboot is being talked about by the series’ original Sony star Don Johnson, who reveals whether the 80s crime drama could be remade. The original show follows Johnson’s Detective Sonny Crockett alongside Phillip Michael Thomas’ Detective Ricardo Tubbs as they work undercover missions for the Metro-Dade Police Department in Miami. The series is best known for embracing a New Wave influence, making it one of the greatest procedurals ever made. Since then, however, the series has not been remade, except for a 2006 movie of the same name with Collin Farrell and Jamie Foxx.
Talk to Colliderbut, Johnson revealed that he believes a Miami Vice Reboot would be difficult to doAlthough there are ideas about how it could come to fruition. The actor recalled how podcast host Joe Rogan discussed the series before, arguing that it was a classic of its time. Because of this, the star believes that there are too many ideas floating around for how it could be ridden for it to happen faithfully right now. Check out what Johnson had to say below:
I haven’t heard the show, but there was a Joe Rogan show not too long ago. A friend of mine told me that he heard it. Apparently, he and someone else were singing my praises about how Sonny Crockett was the greatest character of all time, and there was no one before or since who filled those shoes. I am Don’t say that, it’s Joe Rogan and someone else. I feel that way about the time and the texture of the 80s. It is different now. It is difficult. It can be done. I have a plan for it, but there are so many people with their thumbs in the pie right now and so many iterations that it’s hard to cut through all of that and really find the gems that we found back then.
What Don Johnson’s statement means for a Miami Vice reboot
It doesn’t seem to be on the table right now
As of writing, there are no concrete plans to remake the modern procedural, with the movie directed by Michael Mann being the latest adaptation. however, Vin Diesel announced a Miami Vice Rebooted by his production company One Race Television in 2017Meaning ideas for a potential reboot are in the works. Johnson was privy to some details about its production, but in 2021 was no longer in conversation about the return of the series. The news about the project also stopped, making its future unclear.

Given how much he likes Rogan discussing how classic the original is, it sounds like a new series would have to be faithful to the tone of the original. This could be more difficult in the 2020s, depending on how the show would progress.
Our take on Miami Vice’s potential reboot
This series doesn’t need to be remade
Although Mann’s movie proved more can be done with Miami Vice Beyond the TV series, its classic look and feel is so cemented in the ’80s that a remake wouldn’t be able to live up to the original. While it might be interesting to see a more modern take on the show, it could also damage the legacy of the franchise, which has managed to stay true to the original premise thus far. Although a remake could easily happen under Diesel in the future, it is not necessary because the original is classic.
