Doctor Who's Weeping Angel comes to life in a perfect and terrifying cosplay

The Lonely Assassins stalk the universe once again, as a cosplayer brings Doctor WhoThe terrifying Weeping Angels from the movie into the real world in incredibly meticulous detail. Created by Steven Moffat for Season 3's “Blink” in 2007, the Weeping Angels may look like harmless statues, but they can move when out of sight, luring unknown victims into a false sense of security before ending their lives. After occupying abandoned houses, shipwrecks and the dark streets of New York, the Weeping Angels made their final appearance in Doctor Who is “Vila dos Anjos” from season 13?

Although no living statues have appeared in Ncuti Gatwa's ongoing work Doctor Who period, body painter and artist Melissa Croft shared his terrifying take on the Lonely Assassins in a new Instagram Reel.

Croft's incredible body paint captures the stone-carved details of the monsters, including the surface of the statue and the wear it has suffered over time with fantastic, realistic-looking depth. Alongside a pair of carefully decorated wings, fake fangs, and a wig that looks rock solid, the cosplayer's work is sure to get any attention. Doctor Who fans nervous and unable to turn around due to his impressive work and out of fear.

Why Weeping Angels Are So Terrifying

Monsters has been a success since its debut episode

Although only introduced in the revival, the Weeping Angels already occupies a high position among Doctor Who is it most iconic monsters. “Blink” not only introduced audiences to the terrifying physical appearance of the monsters, but also showed their sadistic side. They have the ability to steal an individual's life, sending them back in time and feeding on the energies of what could have been.

Subsequent stories would add more layers to their terror, from how they can possess and transform a being if they so choose, to their unfathomable powers over light and sound to attract and approach their prey. Even after 17 years, the Weeping Angels are still a horror whose the mystique allows its mythology to be further refined.

Our thoughts on revitalizing Croft's Weeping Angels

The creatures have been dormant in the new age

Focusing on new concepts and different monster forms, the Weeping Angels have not yet reappeared to face the Fifteenth Doctor.​​​​​ Despite Gatwa's hopes, the creatures have not appeared on screen since 2021, although they have since appeared in Big Finish's audio drama against the Eighth Doctor (Paul McGann). However, with their fan-favorite status, it's probably a matter of time before the Weeping Angels return. Until then, Croft's spectacular but terrifying show Doctor Who the body paint is a chilling reminder of the horrors the Whoniverse has to offer.
