Darth Vader will always be Star Wars’ most iconic character

Darth Vader is at the center of the entire Skywalker saga. After all, this is the story of Anakin Skywalker’s redemption; the Dark Lord of the Sith was not as committed to the dark side as he believed. Tereshchenko describes the character perfectly when he points to a struggle deep within the Sith Lord’s soulsomething that would only be resolved when he surrendered to his humanity and chose to redeem his son in Return of the Jedi. The Sith Meditation Spheres are places where the dark side is focused, so it was here that he sought to overcome this humanity.

The Sith Lord believed he had effectively killed Anakin Skywalker when he committed to the dark side in Star Wars: Episode III – Revenge of the Sithcompletely destroying it. In reality, however, the very fact that he kept returning to this Meditation Sphere showed that he had failed; Anakin was still there and Darth Vader had to continue working to repress his humanity. He focused his anger and hatred on trying to keep Anakin under control, but – like the Star Wars saga revealed – that was never enough.
