Devil 4 want to give Vase of Hatred owners the best value for their money, so Some future content will be exclusive to those who own the expansion. One of the concerns around Devil 4It’s first paid DLC would be a flash-in-the-pan that lasted a single season before everything returned to normal. Many fans found it difficult to justify purchasing the content if it was a glorified season, but it turns out that Vase of HatredIts impact on the game will continue to be felt going forward.
Talking to Polygon, Devil general manager Rod Fergusson explained that Vase of Hatred owners will have access to exclusive new content in future seasonsmeaning the DLC is not tied to Season 6. Explaining that the development team wanted to combat the feeling of an expansion being “a single moment in time“, Blizzard is ensuring that Vase of Hatred justifies its price. The goal is to ensure that the DLC is “valuable beyond season 6” although a vision for what that will look like has yet to be revealed.
Dynamics for seasonal content
Ready-made expansions just don’t work right now
When it comes to expansions for multiplayer games, it no longer makes sense to release a single DLC that temporarily impacts the game. The move to seasonal content means that players who don’t purchase premium DLC will still gain new items and cosmetics, so live service games should now go further. Now there needs to be a good reason to buy an expansionespecially when its price is almost that of a new AA release; Blizzard’s emphasis on more Vase of Hatred the content demonstrates that you know this.
Fergusson is right that expansions can often feel like a momentary growth, providing a quick shot in the arm before the core experience returns to normal. Ensuring that Vase of Hatred players get their money’s worth makes the DLC feel more like an investment for enthusiasts. It certainly makes it easier to justify the purchase, even if those who can’t afford to pick it up feel left out.
This is great news for the owners of the ship of hate
As long as Diablo 4 stays balanced
As encouraging as it is to see Devil 4 do your best to provide players with a decent return on investment, I’m concerned about the precedent this sets. As long as the base game can satisfy players who can’t afford expansions, then I think the community will be happy with future seasons providing exclusive content. However, if this content ends up being central to the experience, it could easily feel like players are being pressured into purchasing the DLC to have fun.
