Dead Pool is an incredibly strange character with tons of ridiculous quirks, and one of the strangest has always been his obsession with chimichangas. This obsession is so big that not only does it feature heavily in the live action Dead Pool films, but there are even toys dedicated to him, and this is entirely due to Saturday night live.

The origins of Deadpool’s obsession with chimichangas were revealed by CBR, who tracked down the urban legend. Legend says that Deadpool’s obsession was inspired by a joke in Saturday night live – and to everyone’s surprise, it was. During an old skit of the iconic television show, Jimmy Smits pronounced too many words in Spanish, which inspired the then-Dead Pool writer Fabian Nicieza and Mark Gruenwald will do the same at the Marvel office.

This new game amused them both so much that Nicieza decided to add it to the Dead Pool comic book he was working onwhich started the trend of Deadpool’s absolute love for chimichangas. Ironically, at first, Deadpool didn’t even prefer chimichangas; he just enjoyed saying the word. But it ended up becoming one of his favorite meals and has been constantly referenced over the years, especially in the latest live-action trilogy.

Saturday night live is one of the longest-running comedy shows on American television and some of the biggest names in acting and comedy have been on it at one point or another, including Adam Sandler, Norm McDonald, Robert Downey Jr. and more. The sketch show has been a huge aspect of American pop culture for decades, and it’s no surprise that sitcom characters like Deadpool end up taking material from the show. It’s especially funny that a discard SNL the joke became a staple of Deadpool’s personality moving forward.

Deadpool is a character who was meant to be funny and has been around for a long time, which means Deadpool needs to constantly evolve with society to stay funny.
