Warning: Spoilers for Deadpool and Wolverine: WWIII #3!The traditionally volatile relationship between Deadpool And Wolverine Has finally made a breakthrough. The two spent years as the ultimate frenemies, with the friendship aspect never exactly reciprocal. Oftentimes, Deadpool would much rather be around Wolverine than vice versa, with the former irritating the latter at every turn.
Thankfully, it appears the duo are finally on the same page as of Deadpool and Wolverine: WWIII #3 by Joe Kelly, Adam Kubert, Frank Martin and VC Joe Sabino. As is usually the case, Deadpool finds himself closer to Wolverine than the latter would care to be – in more ways than one – but this time, some kind words are shared that allow them to bury the hatchet.
By allowing both men to let bygones be bygones, it not only allows them to enter a surprisingly mature phase in their partnership, but it highlights Wolverine’s particular growth as a character.
Deadpool and Wolverine are now closer than ever
Literally and figuratively
When Wolverine tracks down a missing Deadpool in Siberia, he finds in his place a genetically modified version of Deadpool, called Wade Wilson III (or WWIII). The culprit behind this modification, Delta, unleashes his snowflake monster on both Weapon X experiments. Because the modification cured Deadpool’s immortality, it appears that Wade is actually dead once Snowflake stomps him out. However, this issue reveals during Wolverine’s fight with Snowflake that Wade survived thanks to his blood entering Wolverine’s bloodstream, momentarily conjoining the two.
While they are together, they fight against Delta’s soldiers while telepathically (or bi-lepathically, as Deadpool calls it) communicating. Deadpool takes the opportunity to constantly praise Wolverine, calling him a “World-class bastard, yes… but a good ******* man.” Of course, it’s Wolverine he’s talking to, and Logan isn’t exactly receptive to kind words, to say the least. “When you say **** off, I hear I love you,” Is Wade’s comeback nonetheless. At the end of the story, when Deadpool asks if their next meeting will be friendly, Wolverine doesn’t answer right away, but he smiles as they come into action again..
The evolution of Deadpool and Wolverine’s relationship
They bond by being monsters
Wolverine and Deadpool have been at each other’s throats for decades, so even the slight implication that they’re willing to be on friendlier terms is promising. For the first time, it really feels like their dynamic is evolving into something newAway from the typical “quip and stab each other” routine they are used to. They are finally able to bond, all because Wade recognizes the growth Wolverine has taken in trying to prove himself more than just a monster, which mirrors Wade’s journey in many ways. like Deadpool told Wolverine, “Nobody decided we were monsters, but me.”
