It is clear from the preview for DC’s new Batman and Robin: Year One series that Batman considers Dick a future crime fighter, not a victim. After his painful past, being orphaned when his parents fell to their deaths during a performance, Dick understandably has the urge to protect others. However, Alfred makes a good point about how the boy’s heroic motivations come from a hateful place. He is similar to his adoptive father in this way, but Bruce eventually found ways to work past his trauma, to fight for the benefit of Gotham, and not fulfill his vision of revenge.

This is the reason Bruce allows young kids like Dick to fight him, despite their age. He knows there is nothing he can do to stop them. Instead, he wants to give them the space to learn the rights and wrongs of being a hero and serve as a supervisor to ensure that they never give in to their dark urges. Without Bruce’s help, Dick could be a much different version of Nightwing. However, through Batman’s guidance during his early days as Robin, he learned to perfect his crime fighting style without giving into his rage.

What’s fascinating about this discovery in Batman and Robin: Year One Is how it applies to other Robins throughout Batman’s history. The most interesting by far is Bruce’s own son, Damian Wayne, given his origin before donning the cape. He was originally trained by the League of Shadows at the behest of his mother, Talia al’Ghul. When he was brought to live with his father, his attitude made a name for him as one of the most brutal Robins in DC history.
