DC is teasing Superboy’s long-awaited return and it better be permanent)

The little Kryptonian hero Superboy is making a comeback as revealed by a tease from an iconic artist. It’s been years since Superman’s son, Jon Kent, ventured into space and returned almost an adult. But a few select teases suggest that DC Comics is ushering in the return of the fan-favorite hero.

On X, Batman artist Jorge Jiménez posted a preview of a piece of art he is working on. Jiménez did not post any words in his message, although he did post two emojis, one showing a curious face while the other remained silent. The image itself was of Jon Kent, but instead of the adult he is now, he turned back into a child.

In particular, Jon appears to be of “Rebirth” era age once again, and he’s even wearing his old Superboy costume. It’s difficult to make out other details in the image, but Superman is next to his son.

Is DC Comics really turning back the clock on Jon?

Jon Kent debuted at the end of Convergence event in 2015 and became Superman’s sidekick, Superboy, during DC’s “Rebirth” period. Jon quickly became a fan-favorite character, largely due to his friendship with Damian Wayne, which was explored during the Super Sons series (also drawn by Jiménez). However, Jon’s time as Superboy came to an end when he decided to go to space with his grandfather Jor-El, only to be kidnapped by Ultraman and held hostage for years on Earth-3. After returning, it wasn’t long before Jon took on the title of Superman alongside his father and has remained so ever since.

It’s clear that DC Comics revised Jon’s time as Superboy without actually aging him. The publisher has published several Super Sons miniseries, as well as other stories set before Jon was getting older. That said, DC is aging Superman’s son in a future issue of the magazine. Shazam! So it’s not outside the possibility that Superboy’s return isn’t just a one-off gimmick (especially if Jiménez’s tease is for a larger project involving a younger Jon). A proper return for Superboy would undoubtedly be a good direction for the character which, admittedly, has been lost in recent years.

Jon returning to Superboy could be more than just nostalgia

Jon’s sudden aging was controversial, to say the least, but DC Comics tried to find a place for him by having him be Earth’s Superman while his father traveled through space. But since Clark’s return, Jon has truly been without a place in the DC Universe. To his credit, he landed a prominent role in Absolute powerbut it only added more trauma to a character who has yet to properly reckon with his stolen childhood. J.about becoming Superboy again may be controversial for somebut it could be a great fresh start for the character.

Again, there’s no indication that Jiménez is teasing a true Superboy return. It could end up being just a one-off episode, a flashback, or even a variant. But with DC revisiting Jon’s childhood soon, Jiménez’s art is a nice reminder of how beloved Superboy was among fans (which DC obviously knows, given how often it revisits this period). Hopefully, if Jon becomes Superboy Once again, it will be a permanent change to explore the dynamics that were changed so many years ago.
