The Walking Dead: Daryl Dixon showrunner David Zabel addressed the potential for crossovers with other zombie spinoffs in the European show’s future. Daryl Dixon season 3 will take the series to Spain, continuing the adventures of Daryl (Norman Reedus) and Carol (Melissa McBride) as they continue their quest to return home. Despite the program’s international setting, it continually recognizes its place on the broader stage. Undead universe, with mentions of characters like Judith (Cailey Fleming) and places like the Commonwealth. This firmly establishes the franchise’s continued recognition of its shared zombie universe.
Talking to CinemaBlend (through Yahoo), Zabel said that, despite having “free rein“about what happens in Daryl Dixonhe doubts he would be able to use characters who appear in existing spinoffs. The showrunner offers the example of Negan (Jeffrey Dean Morgan) suddenly appearing, firmly establishing that anything that might break the canon of other shows isn’t going to happen. Check out what Zabel said below:
I had free rein. I talk to [franchise chief creative officer Scott M. Gimple] all the time and he said, ‘You have free rein, at least for now. Keep doing what you’re doing. But at some point, I imagine some things could be determined by what the other characters are doing and where they are. So I don’t know if Negan is going to get on a raft in the Hudson and end up [in Europe].
What David Zabel’s Statement Means for Daryl Dixon’s Crossovers
The spinoff may not be how everything intersects
Zabel’s statement highlights how, despite the storytelling freedom he has on the spinoff, there are some elements that remain off-limits for the sake of other shows. For example, while Dead CityThe timeline indicates a range of years where other adventures with Negan could have happened, it would be confusing to have him appear in the European seriesS. However, Daryl Dixon Season 2 ended with Ash (Manish Dayal) taking Laurent (Louis Puech Scigliuzzi) to the Commonwealth, the new goal of returning home now suggesting the location could feature in the series finale.
Creative director Scott Gimple had already recognized the possibility of UndeadSomeday crossovers intersect in a series of limited events. Because of this, it doesn’t seem Daryl Dixon 3rd season and, by extension, Dead City season 2 will feature characters from different spinoffs meeting up. Instead of, It looks like Daryl won’t see his former allies until the end of the showpotentially reuniting with them in the Commonwealth. While this does restrict his show a bit, it doesn’t rule out a potential bigger crossover in the future.
Our Take on Daryl Dixon’s Unlikely Crossovers
The Walking Dead still recognizes its shared universe
Even though Daryl is unlikely to reconnect with Negan or Rick Grimes (Andrew Lincoln) during their spinoff, the show’s new goal of reaching Laurent in the Commonwealth still touches on their shared universe. Although this probably won’t happen in Daryl Dixon itself, a major crossover in Undead the franchise seems inevitable, especially since Gimple is open to the possibility. With Season 3 likely to emphasize how long her journey will take, perhaps the show can live up to expectations for when a crossover with the other series will happen.
