THE Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic video games introduced a terrifying Sith Lord named Darth Nihiluswhose very existence embodied the true nature of the dark side of the Force. While the first KOTOR game featured some of the most memorable villains in the Star Wars franchise, its aptly titled sequel, Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic II – The Sith Lordswent even further with the brutality of his dark side antagonists. Darth Nihilus stood out particularly for his memorable design, unusual language, and incredible Force powers that could destroy entire civilizations.
However, behind the iconic mask and unbelievable Force prowess, Nihilus’ character is rooted in pain and loss, with his greatest ability also acting as a curse. Reviewing your full story in KOTOR II and others Star Wars tales paints a fuller picture of this terrible Sith Lord and what led to his fate in the Star Wars Legends timeline. It also raises whether Darth Nihilus still exists in Star Wars canon and what role he could play if the franchise returned to the Old Republic era.
The origin of Darth Nihilus
A man who lost everything and tried to take it all
Although his real name is unknown, the man who would become Darth Nihilus was a human and a survivor of the Mandalorian Wars, where Revan and his Jedi followers fought against the invading Mandalorian Neo-Crusaders. The war cost him everything he had and everyone he loved, destroying his will to live, although the worst would come at the end of the war. Nihilus was present at the Battle of Malachor V, where the Mass Shadow Generator was activated, which defeated the Mandalorians, but also killed many Jedi and Republic forces.
While Malachor V was shrouded in shadows, Nihilus felt a terrible emptiness caused by his pain, making him a “open wound through the Force.” As time passed, his emptiness turned into hunger, which he began to involuntarily feed through the Force. Each time Nihilus used the Force in this way, his hunger increased and the dark side consumed his body, leaving him hungrier, but less satisfied. His eventual rise as a Sith Lord would offer him the means to harness this power to conquer the galaxy and enact a purge of the Jedi Order.
Darth Nihilus’ Force Powers Explained
Few Sith Lords could match Nihilus’s ability to destroy
To stay alive, Nihilus mastered his ability to consume Force energy, to the point where he could consume entire planets. He found targets sensing worlds rich in the Force and populated by Force-sensitives, leading him to the planet Katarr. It was here that he destroyed not only the native population, but also a gathering of surviving Jedi who had not yet been killed in the Nihilus purge. He used his Force Scream ability to destroy everyone on the surface who heard his voice, with the only survivor being Visas Marr, whom Nihilus made his apprentice.
Despite his increasingly greedy hunger, nothing could stop Nihilus’ body from degenerating, so he used the dark side to change his personality into his robes and armor. Other Sith Lords used this ability to bind their spirits to the physical realm, but it usually happened after they died, causing Nihilus to stand out. No longer the man he had been, Nihilus was now the walking embodiment of primordial hunger, seeing the entire galaxy as nothing but food to keep him alive as he tried to impose his own warped sense of order.
Darth Nihilus and the Sith Triumvirate
The Lord of Hunger allied with Darth Traya and Darth Sion
Although Nihilus cared little for the Force or the Sith, he accepted Darth Traya’s offer to join her when she found him on Malachor V. A former Jedi formerly known as Kreia, Traya came to despise the Force, resenting it. herself of how she used living beings as pawns in an endless quest to maintain balance. She convinced Nihilus that it was the Force that fueled his hunger, and if he learned to master it, he could devastate entire worlds. Traya’s teachings paid off as Nihilus’ power grew, aiding Traya in her mission to exterminate the Jedi Order.
Unfortunately for Traya, she trained her students too well, leading Nihilus and Sion to betray her when they grew impatient with her long-term strategy to exterminate the Jedi.
The two were later joined by another of Traya’s students, who became Darth Sion, and together they formed the Sith Triumvirate. Each of them was given their own special title, with Nihilus appropriately calling himself the “Lord of Hunger”. Unfortunately for Traya, she trained her students too well, leading Nihilus and Sion to betray her when they grew impatient with her long-term strategy to exterminate the Jedi. Nihilus used his Force-draining abilities to weaken Traya and sever her connection to the Force, and while he and Sion thought she was dead, she actually went into exile and began plotting her revenge.
The fate of Darth Nihilus in KOTOR
A fitting ending where Nihilus finally met his match
Nihilus and Sion managed to purge the Jedi Order of all but a few remnants, and their dominance of the galaxy seemed assured. However, it was at this time that Traya, having returned to her identity as Kreia, met and made an alliance with Meetra Surik, the Exiled Jedi. Surik voluntarily surrendered to the Jedi Council’s judgment after ordering the Mass Shadow Generator to activate on Malachor V, but after allying with Kreia, she vowed to locate the remaining Jedi Masters and find a way to defeat the Sith.
Surik later confronted Nihilus, aided by his redeemed apprentice and Canderous Ordo, known as Mandalore the Preserver. Unknown to Nihilus, Surik also possessed the ability to harness the Force energy of others, essentially making her his opposite. Nihilus’s failed attempt to drain Surik’s Force energy left him weak and vulnerable, and after a harrowing duel, Nihilus was finally defeated. Marr attempted to remove the Nihilus mask and see his tormentor’s face, but his body disintegrated in the dark side energy, leaving only his robes behind. His spirit survived within his armor, which was taken and buried on Korriban.
Is Darth Nihilus officially Canon?
The Movies Suggest Nihilus Could Return
Although Nihilus has not been introduced or mentioned in canon, an easter egg suggests that he may still exist in the official timeline. Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker features statues of ancient Sith Lords on the planet Exegol, and Nihilus appears to be one of them. Since the canonical timeline has not yet delved into the Old Republic era, perhaps a future Star Wars The story will bring Nihilus back to torment the galaxy again. For now, Darth Nihilus remains the most terrifying Sith Lord in Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic and maybe all Star Wars franchise.
