What ‘Cold Day in Hell’ Means for Daredevil’s Legacy

Daredevil joins the likes of Old Logan With a dark story about the future

One of the most successful formats Marvel has discovered is taking a character and placing them in a dark, dystopian future. This was first seen with Old Logan by Mark Millar and Steve McNiven. It’s no coincidence that the same artist from this legendary book is returning to Daredevil: Cold Day in Hell. One of the central parts Old Logan was taking Wolverine and placing him in a post-apocalyptic world, a truly desperate situation where there are no heroes left. The book was a huge success and Daredevil is finally getting the same treatment, which should have been done a long time ago.

Of all Marvel’s heroes, Daredevil has always been one of the darkest. He is ridiculously obsessive and his stories never pull any punches. While other major characters like Spider-Man certainly have dark histories, this is rarely the norm, but and for Daredevil. Taking a character like Matt Murdock and placing him in a bleak future where all hope seems lost is a scenario where his character would thrive due to his obsessive nature and history of dealing with dark material, and many others have been in similar situations, as in Old Logan and Spider-Man: Reign.

Our opinion on Daredevil: Cold Day in Hell

The best Daredevil stories have always had a darker tone

Matt Murdock is a character who will play anything to save your city. But after losing his powers, he just couldn’t help people like he used to. As the world grew darker and darker around him, all he could do was stand by as society descended into misery. Now, despite his age, he has been given a second chance with the return of his powers. While Reckless may not have been able to prevent his city from falling into darkness, this new story will show readers just how far he is willing to go to pull it out of the abyss.

Daredevil: Cold Day in Hell #1 will go on sale in April 2024 from Marvel Comics.
