What happened in Dandadan episode 7?
One of the best anime episodes in a long time
The episode begins with Momo and Okarun, who is carrying Aira, running through the warehouse to escape Acrobatic Silky. Due to the numerous obstacles in the way, Okarun struggles to keep up, giving the spirit a home advantage. Momo is hit and falls, while Okarun continues running, becoming trapped. However, in his search, the spirit becomes trapped in his hair and is unable to move. Momo gets up and uses her powers to contain the spirit, allowing Okarun to go full throttle and pass through her.
Although the spirit has been defeated, Turbo Granny tells Momo and Okarun that Aira is dead. Shocked, the two do their best to perform CPR and resuscitate her, but to no avail. The spirit rises and as the two prepare to fight and protect Aira’s corpse, the spirit tells her that she can revive her by transferring her aura to Aira with Momo’s help. Turbo Granny confirms that this is possible, and although hesitant, they do it anyway. Grandma, however, days when, as the spirit still regrets, she will die and turn into nothing instead of passing into the next world. This is when the episode shifts to Acrobatic Silky’s backstory.
She was a single mother who struggled with debt and survived by doing every job possible (including prostitution) to give her daughter a decent life. They ate together, practiced ballet together, and were basically inseparable. Unfortunately, after she uses some of her money to buy her daughter a dress, their home is invaded by two debt collectors who attack her and kidnap her daughter, fatally wounding the mother. After doing one last dance before jumping off a roof, she becomes a spirit that wanders aimlessly, oblivious to her past.
One day, a little Aira, who sees ghosts, grabs her and calls her mother by mistake, causing her to remember her lost daughter but mistaking her for Aira. The ghost then swears to protect her, transforming into the terrifying Acrobatic Silky. The scene cuts back to the present, and as Acrobatic Silky is withering away, Aira, who saw her memories through their connection, sees this and hugs her, calling her mother. once more, thus letting the spirit pass peacefully into the afterlife.
This episode packed an emotional punch
The bond between mother and daughter was touching
This backstory was one of the most anticipated moments of this season, and the Science SARU studio and team went above and beyond to make it as emotionally impactful as possible. Everything from the soundtrack and visuals to the voice acting was perfect. However, the scene where Acrobatic Silky danced in the water was breathtaking. Additionally, most of it was original to the anime, and this is yet another example where the anime is improving on the source material and making it better, while also being true to the quirky and unique nature of the manga.
The implications of Aira’s revival are huge
Although fans are going crazy over how good the episode was, the consequences of Aira’s return are interesting. She has been given the aura of a powerful spirit, and just like Okarun can use Turbo Granny’s powers, fans can expect her to be able to use Acrobatic Silky’s powers. Plus, she’ll be part of the main cast going forward, and as controversial as it was, this episode at least humanized her and showed how she was still a good person despite her insecurities.
Dandadan has been on a roll so far and this episode really showed how good the series can be. More than a day later, it’s still trending on social media and receiving praise for being, by far, one of the best episodes this year. There are a few more episodes left for the series to finish its first season, and it can already be concluded that it was a great success given the increase in manga sales and the increase in the number of fans.
Two high school students, involved in a bet to prove the existence of ghosts or aliens, encounter frightening paranormal threats, acquire superpowers and possibly discover love. The series combines supernatural elements with personal dynamics as the protagonists navigate their new abilities and unexpected challenges.
