As James Gunn’s DC Universe prepares to come to life this fall, Creature Commands actors Sean Gunn and Zoë Chao share their experiences participating in the first reboot project. While Superman (featuring David Corenswet as the big screen’s next Man of Steel) takes off in 2025, Chapter 1 of the DC Universe: “Gods and Monsters” movies and TV shows is getting an early start on the small screen. Gunn is an expert at elevating lesser-known comic book characters, and the Creature Commands characters will be the next group of players to gain prominence in the general public.
THE Creature Commands The story finds Amanda Waller creating a new team of incarcerated individuals after her activities with Task Force X were exposed to the world. Since she can no longer use humans to carry out government missions, Waller relies on real monsters to fulfill her special mission, led by Rick Flag Sr. Gunn wrote all seven episodes, and Creature Commands is scheduled to air on Max from December 5th to early January 2025.
With less than a month to go until the launch of Gunn’s DC Universe, TelaRant interviewed two of the main stars of the Max series, Sean Gunn and Chao. The pair teased the first installment of Chapter 1: “Gods and Monsters,” and Chao shared his feelings on entering the DC Universe while Gunn talked about taking on GI Robot and Weasel in the same project. THE Creature Commands the co-stars also talked about their respective characters’ journeys on and off the Max TV show.
Sean Gunn and Zoë Chao Preview GI Robot, Weasel and Nina Mazursky in Season 1 of Creature Commandos
ScreenRant: I’ve been watching these five episodes on loop over the last few days. This show is a lot of fun and you should be very proud. Zoë, we see a reluctant sisterhood between Nina and Bride. Is that how you see it and how does it evolve over the rest of the season?
Zoë Chao: Yes, that’s a good way to describe it. They’re an unlikely duo, but it makes sense in Motley’s misfit group that they [connect.] They’re both so familiar with tragedy and trauma, and I think they’re the only women in the group. So yes, they form an unexpected alliance, but I’m really happy that they actually found each other, and I’m happy that Nina also found GI Robot, because she’s spent her whole life not belonging anywhere, and she’s found her crew.
Creature Commandos’ Zoë´Chao on being a newcomer to the DC universe
“Oh man, as someone who is new to the comics and the DCU, how much of a scholar must I become to play this role responsibly?”
You are one of the youngest players in this franchise. You get a full backstory of everything Nina went through before what we see of her in Creature Commands Or did you learn more about it as the plot progressed, as you were given script by script?
Zoë Chao: We received all of our scripts at the same time, so it was a pleasure. We have seven scripts, and I just tore them up and reread them again, which rarely happens, because they’re so interesting. It was cool. I was nervous before getting the scripts. I was like, ‘Oh man, as someone who is new to the comics and the DCU, how much of a scholar do I have to become to play this role responsibly?’ But what was such a relief was that each script has so much information, and James is the scholar, and we’re in such good, responsible, steady hands that I just dove into what was written for us and the answers. were there.
Sean Gunn: I want to start off and also say: one of the unique things about the story, I think, is that it’s going to be really amazing to watch week after week starting on December 5th, but if you want to, you can wait until the end, and you can go on a binge, like a 3 and a half hour movie, which is a long movie, sure, but it really works both ways.
Zoë Chao: As someone who knows nothing about the DCU and is now excited to learn so much more because of this series, you don’t need to have any prior knowledge to really dive in. I think that’s what’s really special about this show, and the way James writes is that there really is something for everyone. There’s somebody that people who are in the depths of the world are just going to have a feast, but also people who are accessing this material for the first time are going to be like, ‘Yeah, sign me up!’
[Sees Chao holding up her Nina Funko! Pop figure] What’s it like becoming an action figure now?
Zoë Chao: It’s so cool! I met a lot of these guys two weeks ago, and they’ve all had Funkos for a while, but this is my first Funko and I can’t imagine a cooler container. She is incredible. This is her little water tank helmet and her water suit, this is her collar. And when she eats, she has to put food on a sprout and then the food goes to the water tank helmet, and then she eats like that.
Sean Gunn and Zoë Chao on the path forward for their Creature Commandos characters in the DCU
“All Creature Commands feel like outsiders who need a place to belong.”
What would you say is your characters’ throughline, both in and out of the events of Creature Commandos?
Sean Gunn: I think all of the Creature Commandos feel like outsiders who need a place to belong, and that’s true of both Weasel and GI Robot, for me. There’s nothing like them, and they just want to belong and be somewhere safe. I think that’s true for almost all of us on the show.
Zoë Chao: I think she spent her whole life trying to fit in somewhere or be accepted or claimed by some beings. I think the arc for this motley group of monsters is that they come together and it’s like, ‘Why are we all here?’ We are here because we do work that is considered very dangerous for humans. So we are the last resort, we are your worst option and no one gets along. But over the course of the season, you learn that they are all linked by a deep understanding or familiarity with tragedy, and maybe this is the family they all needed.
