After decades of speculation, Mel Brooks is returning to do Space balls 2and there are already lots of exciting updates about the long-awaited comedy sequel. The original Space balls is writer/director Mel Brooks’ parody of Star Wars and features Bill Pullman as the Han Solo-esque Lone Starr, John Candy as his sidekick Barf, and Rick Moranis as the villainous Dark Helmet. Although the film was only moderately successful upon release, it soon became a cult hit thanks to the perfect send-up of the original Star Wars trilogy, separating its commercialism and silly sci-fi tropes.

Josh Gad Provides a Script Update

While there have been few updates following the film’s initial announcement, the latest news comes as an update to Josh Gad’s script regarding Space balls 2. Confirming this the script is now finishedGad also spent a considerable amount of time marveling at the entire experience of creating the Legacy sequel. “The process of working on this with and alongside Mel Brooks has been one of the highlights of my career” said Gad, before becoming coy about certain details. Although he could offer little concrete information, Gad said “I think we’re getting to the end zone here.

Without MGM taking me to the Culver prison cells, I can say the recruitment is done. Everyone who read it was impressed. The process of working on this with and alongside Mel Brooks has been one of the highlights of my career.

It was kind of a fever dream that all this happened. Mel has been incredibly supportive and involved and electrified by this because it’s the one that surprisingly got away. It’s a dream to finally be able to make the reality prophesied by Yogurt in the first film happen. I can’t say more than that. I can’t tell you anything more [the] process at this point, but I can say that every hour of every day is now spent getting this project closer and closer to reality – and I think we’re approaching the end zone here.

While Brooks won’t be directing the highly-anticipated sci-fi parody sequel, the comedy icon has been brought on board as a producer.

In an update that many fans thought would never happen, Amazon MGM announced in June 2024 that it had given the green light to the development of Space balls 2. What is more, the studio is collaborating with original director Mel Brooks to bring the sequel to life. While Brooks won’t be directing the highly-anticipated sci-fi spoof sequel, the comedy icon has been brought on board as a producer. Instead of, directing duties went to Josh Greenbaum who directed the 2023 raunchy comedy Strays.

It is important to note that Brooks is not writing the film, and the script was written by Benji Samit, Dan Hernandez and new star Josh Gad.. Samit is known for his family-friendly comedy scripts and has written Pokémon Detective Pikachu, The Addams Family 2and the great success of 2023 Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Mutant Mayhem. Little is known about the film in terms of plot, and The role Gad will play has not yet been revealed. No timeline was provided, but Gad revealed in November 2024 that the script was completed.

Josh Gad will star in the parody sequel

Almost nothing is known about Space balls 2but it was confirmed that FrozenJosh Gad will pull double duty as writer and star in sci-fi spoof. No role has been assigned to Gad yet, but it is assumed that the multi-talented actor will have a lead role. It’s also unclear whether any of the film’s original stars will return, although there are a few cast members, like John Candy and Joan Rivers, who have sadly passed away since the first film’s debut.

Cast members like Bill Pullman, Daphne Zuniga, and Rick Moranis could theoretically return to reprise his roles, although the latter has largely retired from acting in recent decades. An almost certain return is that of Mel Brooks, who played the famous role of Yogurta money-obsessed parody of Yoda who oversees the film-within-a-film’s merchandising, Space balls. With Star Wars becoming even more commercialized since the first Space balls movie, Yogurt has to return to skewer the franchise once again.

Although Amazon MGM has not released any story details about its upcoming sequel to Space ballsIt’s not hard to imagine where the sci-fi parody could go. Since the original debuted in 1987, there have been a number of Star Wars films, some of which are far from perfect. Space balls 2 will almost certainly scoff at the acquisition of Star Wars and characters like Yogurt will have a lot more to do, especially with characters like Baby Yoda and their unbelievable commercial potential. Otherwise, the true story of Space balls 2 it is of no importance and will only serve as a backdrop for the stinging barbs.
