An original Chicago Police character approached the plate and took over from Hailey Upton as a detective in the Intelligence Unit in season 12. However, Hank Voight should be worried about their promotion by digging up things from the past. Jason Beghe Chicago Police The Season 12 character certainly isn't the same person she was four years ago, but her old self could come back to haunt her with Upton gone and someone else replacing her on the team.
THE A Chicago universe returns on Wednesday, January 8, 2025, with Chicago Middle season 10, episode 9, "No Love Lost," airing at 8 p.m. ET, Chicago Fire season 13, episode 9, 'The Favor' at 9pm ET, and Chicago Police season 12, episode 9, 'Friends and Family,' at 10 p.m. ET.
Tracy Spiridakos' Upton is out Chicago Police after the season 11 finale to start fresh. After Jay Halstead was gone and he and Upton divorced, she needed to start over, and Voight knew that. So he encouraged Upton to leave Intelligence and the city, meaning there was a spot open for a detective on the team. THE Chicago Police the season 12 premiere revealed that Emily Martel, a detective Adam Ruzek knew from the police academy, took Upton's place. The seat would soon be vacated again when Martel died in episode 1, but someone familiar soon stepped forward and became Upton's permanent replacement.
Kim Burgess effectively replaces Hailey Upton in intelligence
Burgess is promoted in Chicago PD season 12
It was only fair that one of the original three Chicago Police characters (Kim Burgess, Kevin Atwater, and Adam Ruzek) took Upton's place in the Intelligence Unit in season 12. They had been officers for years and it was time for at least one of them to be promoted. Chicago Police Season 12, Episode 6 revealed that Burgess would be Upton's successor after she strived to (finally) become a detective during "Pawns."

Just like that, Burgess officially replaced Upton in Chicago Police season 12. However, her new role isn't the only way Marina Squerciati's character has taken Upton's place. Burgess' entire demeanor has changed this season. She is trying to be the best detective possible and is willing to do whatever it takes to succeed, even if it means staying away from Intelligence (which Burgess was willing to do until boss Charlie Reid assigned her to his original team). .
Voight almost murdered Roy Walton
Reid apparently placed Burgess back into Intelligence after his promotion as detective in Chicago Police season 12 for his own benefit, but it's unclear what his exact motives were/are. Maybe Reid wants Burgess to owe him, and he can profit by getting her to give him information about Voight. If that's the case, Voight should have been worried about Roy Walton's death coming back to haunt him.
Upton shot and killed Roy, and Voight disposed of his body to protect Upton (and himself, of course).
As some may recall, Upton stopped Voight from killing Roy in cold blood after he tortured him during the Chicago Police season 8 finale. However, Roy got his hands on Voight's gun. To stop him, Upton shot and killed Roy, and Voight disposed of his body to protect Upton (and himself, of course). Roy's murder was the last one Voight covered up. and with everything that happened in Chicago Police Season 12, with Burgess' promotion and Reid's confusing schemes, perhaps Burgess will discover the truth about Roy and be forced to tell his boss.
A spin-off of Chicago Fire, this crime drama follows the detectives and uniformed officers of the Chicago Police Department as they work to solve cases and put criminals behind bars.
