From her previous issue, Catwoman wore a resurrected version of her iconic purple Catwoman costume that, while famous, did little to protect her (and left little to the readers’ imagination). The fun throwback served as a fitting farewell to the creative team of Tini Howard and Carmine Di Giandomenico, after a run that saw major changes for Catwoman. Not the least of which was the introduction of Catwoman’s own cat-family, and surprising superpowers. But it was only a detour until Selina Kyle came back to what really worked for her.

As readers can see for themselves, Selina’s new costume not only makes sense for her line of work, but it looks good on her, too. What’s more, it is a physical symbol of the transformation of Catwoman, when she returns to her thieving roots and becomes a modern criminal. Built for an unknown substance, it is believed to be more than simple fabric, leather or spandex. With structured shoulders and cowls reminding readers that the Catwoman is skilled in a fight, but must take care to be injured. The new suit blends classic and modern with effortless skill.

It’s hard to overlook how Catwoman’s new costume marks a change in her character’s journey, as Torunn Grønbekk’s Catwoman is a departure from Tiny Howard’s previous story arc that involved the Goddess Bast, Catwoman’s nine supernatural lives, and a skull of Meterorite lodged in her head. This is a much simpler Catwoman, back in black and back to basics, a criminal through and through, with a title that sees more mystery and intrigue in the pages instead of high-stakes superhero battles.
