After the news that there would be a spin-off series, titled WallerDetails about the show and cast have been slowly revealed. Amanda Waller is the head of ARGUS (Advanced Research Group United Support) who leads the members of the Suicide Squad and often commits small acts of terrorism to prevent even greater catastrophes. In the DCEU timeline, Waller first appeared in 2016 Suicide Squad and has since been in several DCEU properties, always as the same stolid, no-nonsense boss who casually uses supervillains to achieve his goals.
Since Suicide SquadWaller was played by Viola Davis in The Suicide Squad, Black Adamand the HBO series Peacemaker, bringing his acting seriousness to the world of superheroes. Davis has one of the best filmographies of any actor alive and his performance as Waller has always been one of the bright spots of the DCEU. For HBO Waller, Davis will be a focal point of James Gunn’s DCU. Gunn has proposed an 8-10 year plan for DC properties and the first chapter of that plan will include Waller.
Waller latest news
Release date will not be set until scripts are completed
After first being announced during James Gunn’s DCU reveal, there has been surprisingly little news about Waller. Luckily, though, James Gunn opened up a little about the upcoming series, responding briefly in a post on social media which is still under development. Gunn has said before that no DCU will receive a release date until scripts are completed, something DC’s new universe appears to be doing in response to the sticky situation Marvel Studios sometimes finds itself in regarding project delays.
Alongside James Gunn, Screen Rant recently interviewed Steve Agee about his role in Peacemaker Season 2 and any updates on the status of Wallerin which he will reprise his role. This confirms what Gunn has been saying all along about how the projects will move forward. Agee’s full statement about Waller is as follows:
I think they’re still doing scripts, so there’s no set time yet, and James won’t start something until he’s absolutely happy with the scripts and they’re ready to go. Then, when they’re ready, I’m sure he’ll announce a start time – as an actor who loves to work, that can’t come soon enough for me! [laughs]
Waller confirmed
The series is happening despite no release date being set
Waller was confirmed by Gunn for HBO Max for “Chapter 1” of the DCEU. Advertised next Waller for the next DCEU is Flashlights, which will be about the two Green Lanterns, Hal Jordan and John Stewart; Paradise Lost, set in Wonder Woman’s homeland of Themyscira; and Reinforcement gold, about a man from the future who pretends to be a superhero with his future technology.
Production Status and Where Waller Fits in DC’s Release Slate
Creature Commandos & Peacemaker Season 2 May Provide Hints
There is currently no release date for Waller or any DCEU under Gunn, but the producer has given some hints about when the series might be released. During his explanation of the first chapter of the DCEU, titled “Gods and Monsters” Gunn announced that the true beginning of the DCU would be Supermanwhich is set to be released on July 11, 2025, while Amanda Waller will appear in Creature Commands in December 2024.
Peacemaker season 2 has been confirmed to be released in August 2025, and with the Waller While scripts are still being worked on, it’s unclear where exactly the series will take place in the wider world of the DCU. It will probably follow the events of Peacemaker Season 1, and whatever might happen to Amanda Waller in Creature Commandshowever.
Waller Cast
Only Viola Davis is confirmed
As reported by The direct, Viola Davis said she is excited to reprise her role as Waller. So far, she is the only actress announced for the series. However, some characters from previous films and shows could theoretically appear as well. For example, the comics reveal that Waller raised Nanaue since she was a child, making them an odd mother-son duo. Waller’s spin-off could bring King Shark back to the DCEU. This would also create an interesting dynamic between Waller and her daughter Leota Adebayo (Danielle Brooks), as the audience could see how Waller treats her “children” differently.
More characters were hinted at thanks to a part of Gunn’s DCEU announcement that went largely unnoticed. It appears that some unrevealed characters from Peacemaker will return for Waller (via The wrap). As the 2nd season of Peacemaker will leave before Wallerthere’s a chance John Cena will appear as Christopher Smith/Peacemaker, along with the rest of the team.
Details of Waller’s story
With scripts still being written, the story is unclear
No information has yet been released about what exactly Waller the series will be about, but the end of Peacemaker the first season may give some clues. Peacemaker the ending might have done Suicide Squad 3 impossible, but it could have opened a new direction for Waller. With Task Force X exposed and Waller’s involvement known to the general public, the follow-up series could focus on her crisis management and show her hiding even more sensitive information by any means necessary.
Audiences have only seen Waller at the height of her power, so it would be interesting to see what it would be like when she had to start from nothing.
Waller could also explore the character by finding a way to rebuild a different version of Task Force of the government. It would be a popular version of ARGUS and could even become Peacemaker and pave the way for a new entry in the series with Suicide Squad 3.
Waller showrunners and producers
Doom Patrol and Watchmen writers lead the way
Gunn and his DC Studios co-head Peter Safran announced some of the creative forces who will be working on Waller. According to Collider, Doom Patrol series creator Jeremy Carver will partner with Watchmen writer Christal Henry to write the next one Waller. Safran, Gunn, Carver and Henry represent the creative minds behind the best films and television shows DC has released in the last 10 years, so having them all together in one place for a series starring an Oscar winner is a big challenge. expectations about the series.
How will Waller use Davis effectively?
Gunn and Davis can bring out the best in the character
The DCEU has had a rocky ride, especially when compared to how well Kevin Feige’s MCU was handled. Bringing Gunn in to co-direct the DC films was a smart move by DC. Gunn helped shape Marvel’s brand of humor with Guardians of the Galaxy and completed the monumental task of bringing the MCU to space. Before Guardians, the MCU was mostly stuck on Earth or Asgard, but Gunn’s film expanded the scope of the universe and paved the way for Thanos and the Infinity Gauntlet Saga. It should be simple to achieve something like Waller off the ground successfully.
Many reboots in DC films and TV series have led to the need for more exposition at the expense of character development and moments, which is a shame, especially when it comes to an actor as talented as Davis. It’s now up to Gunn to refocus the DCEU and that will include ending the underutilization of actors like Davis in the DCEU. With Gunn’s help, the DCEU has been moving in a direction that has seen better utilization of on-screen talent, from main characters to supporting characters, and hopefully, it will be the same for Waller.
