Carry-On actually has a lot in common with Toy Story 2

Notice! This post contains spoilers for Carry-On and Toy Story 2.

Netflix's popular new thriller starring Jason Bateman Continueand the classic Disney film Toy Story 2 have a surprising number of similarities. Continue was released exclusively on Netflix on December 13, 2024. Continue The cast stars Taron Egerton as Ethan Kopek, a TSA worker, and Jason Bateman as Hand luggage villain, the Traveler. The thriller takes place almost entirely inside the airport, with Bateman's Traveler forcing Ethan to allow a suspicious package to pass through security, threatening to kill Ethan's pregnant girlfriend, Ethan's friends, and eventually Ethan himself.

While this may not sound very similar to the Disney children's film starring Woody and Buzz Lightyear, Continue and Toy Story 2 shockingly share many commonalities. On the surface, they're linked because each film includes a major arc involving luggage at an airport, but the similarities run much deeper. Based on its main plots and characters, Toy Story 2 and Continue are actually quite similar, even if their interests and target demographics are worlds apart.

How Netflix's Carry-on Is Very Similar to Toy Story 2

The films' connections go beyond the airport setting

Woody meets Jessie and Bullseye, and the three seem surprised, in Toy Story 2

In Toy Story 2The toys must rescue Woody from Al, a man who stole Woody from Andy's house to sell him to a toy museum in Japan. While being painted, sewn and prepared for travel at Al's house, Woody also meets Jessie, Bullseye and the Prospector (or "Stinky Pete"). What Woody doesn't know is that Prospector is willing to do anything to ensure that the four toys make it on that flight, even though he knows that Woody wants to return to Andy and the other toys.

This comes to a head in the final confrontation, during which Jessie and Woody must escape a plane as it is taxiing onto the runway after fighting with the Garimpeiro to free himself from his luggage. Although this is not exactly the same as Hand luggage Traveler intent on releasing a deadly gas and killing everyone on a flight, both films have a dramatic conclusion on the plane itself, with Hand luggage ending up being particularly horrible. In fact, like Riley Utley from Yahoo Entertainment explains in detail, there are a number of connections between these two stories.

Among the biggest similarities are a sequence in which characters drive on sidewalks to get to the airport, accidental exchanges of bags, and the tension built specifically around takeoff. Utley also points out that the specific locations that appear in each film overlap, especially when it comes to conveyor belts and airplane cargo areas. If these connections weren't enough, The main villains of each film are also surprisingly similar.

Even Jason Bateman's character has a lot in common with the Toy Story 2 villain

Interestingly, these characters share numerous characteristics

Arguably, Al is the main villain of Toy Story 2as he kidnaps Woody and plans to sell him and the other three toys for a large profit. However, Al doesn't really know what he's doing. He has no idea that the toys are alive, so even though Woody's theft was immoral and his business practices are a little below the pale, is it really the Prospector who is Toy Story 2 real villain. Despite knowing full well that Woody is acting against his will, Prospector tries a series of tricks to secure his future at the toy museum.

Obviously, Hand luggage Traveler is much more insidious, as he is willing to kill innocent people for a job, but the characters' personalities are quite similar. Both are cold, selfish, and condescending, and both believe their actions are justified. Even their names, Prospector and Traveler, share some similarity. While the two films have some pretty major differences, surprisingly, Continue and Toy Story 2 have more in common than one might expect.
