Captain Pike turns a Star Trek suicide stunt into a rescue from strange new worlds

In Star Trek: Strange New Worlds season 3, Captain Christopher Pike (Anson Mount) attempts a maneuver on the USS Enterprise that usually means suicide. Strange new worlds season 2 ended with a cliffhanger as the Enterprise faced several Gorn ships, including a destroyer. As Captain Pike contemplates his next move, Admiral Robert April (Adrian Holmes) orders the Enterprise to stand down, even if it means leaving several crew members stranded on the Gorn ship. Pike stops, not wanting to leave his people behind but unsure how to proceed, just before the words “continue” appear on the screen.

With Captain Marie Batel’s (Melanie Scrofano) life at stake, Captain Pike faces his own version of the Kobayashi Maru, but he won’t face it alone. At New York Comic-Con 2024, Paramount+ debuted a new clip from Star Trek: Strange New Worlds season 3 which reveals how Pike and his Starship Enterprise crew find a way to rescue their kidnapped companions. The clip not only highlights Pike’s skills as a leader, but also shows the bridge crew coming together to find a solution to their situation.

Captain Pike’s Suicidal Maneuver Will Rescue the Enterprise Crew in Strange New Worlds Season 3

Captain Pike and his crew come up with a daring plan to save their friends

Like any good starship captain, Pike refuses to leave his people behind, so he immediately turns to the crew of the starship Enterprise for suggestions on his next move. While everyone exchanges ideas, Pike hatches a plan to escape the terrifying Gorn fleet while making sure the Enterprise has a way to track it. Pike orders the Enterprise to attack the destroyer Gorn, not to destroy it, but to destroy the ship’s powerful shields. This will allow the Enterprise to fire a fake torpedo at the Gorn ship, which will act as a beacon, so that Pike and his crew can track the ship and rescue their friends.

Traditionally, the captain of a starship would only collide with another starship as a last-ditch effort when no other solution was available. A starship colliding with another at high speed is intended to destroy or seriously cripple both ships and is usually a suicide mission for the ship that is colliding. Pike’s plan not only avoids this unfortunate outcome, but it will also save your captured crew members. This clever solution was a collaborative effort on the part of the bridge crew and proves how strong the Pike crew is as a whole.

Why Star Trek Speed Often Means Starship Suicide

The beat is usually reserved for one last desperate move

All over Star Trek In the timeline, several captains of different ships have ordered their ships to collide with others, usually as a way to prevent further destruction. In Star Trek: First Contact, for example, Lieutenant Commander Worf (Michael Dorn) ordered the USS Defiant to crash into the Earth-threatening Borg cube. At this point in the battle, the Defiant had already lost shields and weapons, and Worf had no other options. Fortunately, Captain Picard arrived with the USS Enterprise-E in time to save the Defiant crew, before the TNG the crew followed the Borg cube back in time.

Star Trek Ships generally only use collision speed when all other options have been exhausted, meaning the ship has already suffered significant damage. A Starfleet captain would only order a suicide run if the risks were incredibly high, such as to prevent an enemy from attacking Earth. Obviously, starships weren’t built to crash into each other, and this desperate maneuver is usually only employed after the ship’s shields fail. Because of this, colliding with another ship often means suicide. Captain Pike and his crew found a way around this Star Trek: Strange New Worlds season 3, using the Enterprise and its shields in a very strategic attack movement.
