Captain America #12 Captain America discusses death with Julie as they prepare for his actual incarnation.

Steve Rogers was stuck in the middle of a battle between the avatars of life and death, with the latter ready to extinguish all life in the Marvel Universe. That means everything is on the line.

One core element of Captain America's character, which is equal parts noble and tragic, is that he knows he may meet his end in the coming fight, and yet never stops fighting. In fact, it's a situation he's familiar with, even comfortable with. Captain America #12 is centered around a pivotal elaboration on this perennial theme. As Steve Rogers tells Julie during their dialogue scene, No soldier, including him, is prepared to be ordered into a battle they cannot win, if it means the "Other guys don't win either."

Since the discovery of his role as a change agent, Steve Rogers has been stuck in the middle of a battle between the avatars of life and death, with the latter ready to extinguish all life in the Marvel Universe. That means everything is on the line, making it perhaps the most important fight he has ever faced. There is no room for failure, selfishness, or holding back, and he knows it. As he tells Julie, there's simply too much at stake, and if his part in the battle is sacrificial, it won't stop him—and it shouldn't stop anyone else, either.

Steve Rogers is ready to let the world go on without him

Captain America knows that not every battle can be won, but this proves that he is one of Marvel's greatest heroes.

Captain America is known as an excellent leader, and This willingness to fight the good fight at any cost is what takes him to that level. He thinks of himself as a soldier, but he has always been much more than that. Steve is the one who is willing to lead the charge even though he won't see the other side of it, and this is a standout quality even among other heroes. As long as his stand means that someone else survives and the world itself has a chance to continue, that's enough for him.

A recurring theme that occurs between Steve and Lyra is her understanding that he is looking for a place to call "home" above all else. Despite technically living for decades, he never really settled in. He fights for a world that, in some ways, he does not feel that he is a part of, but he is always ready to die for it. Captain America Knows that not every battle can be won, but this proves that he is one of the greatest heroes of Marvel, by laying down his life just to give everyone else a chance to see another day.
