Captain America: Brave New World won't just repeat the story of Sam Wilson's Phase 4 MCU

Anthony Mackie spoke about how the story of Captain America: Brave New World will avoid repeating that of its MCU Disney+ series, The Falcon and the Winter Soldier. Anthony Mackie has appeared as Sam Wilson in eight projects and has evolved over the last decade from Steve Rogers' companion, the Falcon, to the MCU's new Captain America. Mackie will next appear in Marvel Studios' Captain America: Brave New World in February 2025, marking his film debut as Captain America after becoming Star-Spangled-Man in Phase 4.

Captain America: Brave New World The launch is heavily featured in the February 2025 issue of Empire Magazinein which Anthony Mackie explains more about the plot of the upcoming film. Mackie explains the difference between Brave new world and The Falcon and the Winter Soldiernoting that although racial themes are still "subtext" in the first, "It's not the focus." Mackie, executive producer Nate Moore and Marvel Studios writer Malcolm Spellman wanted to avoid repeating The Falcon and the Winter Soldierand Mackie's new comments prove that it is.

What [Captain America: Brave New World] it's not, it's The Falcon and the Winter Soldier 2.5. Being a black man in America is something you can't ignore, because every day you leave the house you have to deal with it. It will always be a subtext, but it is not the focus. I think what we covered on the show was specifically for the show.

Captain America: Brave New World Won't Make Sam Wilson's Run a Big Deal

The transition of the Captain America mantle from Chris Evans' Steve Rogers to Anthony Mackie's Sam Wilson was a huge change for the MCU. Sam Wilson became one of the franchise's first legacy heroes and one of the first to adopt the same title as his predecessor, and it was difficult to ignore the relevance of Sam Wilson's run during a time of monumental real-world turmoil for many. The fact that Sam Wilson is black provided an extremely moving and powerful narrative in The Falcon and the Winter Soldierbut it's difficult to achieve this twice effectively.

It makes sense that Marvel Studios would want to avoid repeating the same plot as The Falcon and the Winter Soldier in Captain America: Brave New World. Instead of focusing so much on Sam Wilson's race, it seems Brave new world it will simply establish this evolution of Captain America's mantle as completely normal. Captain America is now black, and accepting this frees the film to explore an honest Captain America storypitting Sam Wilson against the likes of the Leader, Sidewinder, and the Red Hulk rather than an unnecessary racially motivated villain.

The Falcon and the Winter Soldier Offered a More Personal Plot

Sam Wilson debuts as Captain America in The Falcon and the Winter Soldier

Told over six episodes in 2021, The Falcon and the Winter Soldier it was the perfect place to examine Sam Wilson on a deeper level and explore themes of racial injustice. While this certainly still plays a role Captain America: Brave New WorldIt's a good thing this isn't the main focus, as it would run the risk of simply redoing the narrative of the Phase 4 series. Sam Wilson is ready to embark on a bigger, more action-packed adventure in 2025which will cement him as the MCU's Captain America and truly see him take Steve Rogers' place.
