Cancellation and everything we know

The mind-bending sci-fi series Beacon 23 returned to MGM+ for its second season in early 2024, but it was canceled before season 3. Based on the Hugh Howey novel of the same name, the story is set in the farthest reaches of the galaxy as a lonely lighthouse keeper is Shocked to discover he has a passenger with mysterious motives. Besides the tense interpersonal struggle between the isolated and suspicious characters, there was more to the mysterious beacons, and the first season only scratched the surface.

Reviews for both seasons of the MGM+ original have been somewhat mixed, with many pointing out the characters’ shortcomings (via Rotten tomatoes). Although season 2 did little to address previous concerns, Beacon 23 is the type of ambitious sci-fi series that could have blossomed into a long-running hit. With a plethora of twists and turns throughout the first two seasons so far, Beacon 23 could reinvent himself at any moment, which was his strongest aspect. Unfortunately, the series wouldn’t get the chance to flourish and MGM+ pulled the plug after just two seasons.

Although the series’ chance to become a long-running sci-fi hit was there, MGM+ opted to cancel Beacon 23 Two more seasons. The move isn’t particularly surprising considering the poor reviews for the series, but reviews aren’t as important as viewership numbers. Although the streamer did not explain exactly why, Beacon 23 Was probably canceled due to low viewership. Lesser-known streamers like MGM+ (formerly Epix) have to be selective with what they air, and Beacon 23 was an ambitious project that was a big risk.

The end of Season 2 was clearly meant to be another big story reset, but the cancellation means fans may never get a proper conclusion. With Aster still alive (sort of) in the computer, the idea of character deaths in Beacon 23 was completely reset. Halan’s supposed death was also offset by his consciousness removal, and he would have been back in some form in season 3. Meanwhile, Harmony’s newfound connection to the artifact opened the door for an even headier third season.
