A real-life astronaut evaluates the accuracy of a scene from Brad Pitt’s 2019 sci-fi film Astra Ad and points out a serious error. Directed by James Gray, Astra Ad holds an 83% on Rotten Tomatoes and was nominated for an Oscar for Best Sound Mixing. The film follows Roy McBride, an astronaut who embarks on a mission to Neptune to find out what happened to his missing father. In addition to Pitt, Ad Astra the cast includes Tommy Lee Jones, Ruth Negga and Donald Sutherland.
In a video for Insiderformer NASA astronaut Nicole Stott watches a scene from Astra Adin which two groups of astronauts in separate lunar rovers get into a firefight while traveling across the surface of the moon. Stott pointed out that it is very unlikely that these rovers would be able to move so fast on the Moon without continually bouncing and losing control, and eventually gave Astra Ad an accuracy score of 4 out of 10. The suspension of rovers is a little different from that of the cars we have here on Earth. You have to be careful not to go too fast, because they can roll over more easily than a vehicle here on Earth would. So it’s a little tenuous the way you drive. You have to think in three dimensions about the way you’re driving your rover… You’re going too fast, especially if you hit something and it’s bouncing, you’re just going to keep bouncing in that direction. So it’s probably less likely in reality that you would want to drive that fast.
