Warning: Spoilers for Bleach: Thousand-Year Blood War, Part 3, Episode #2
Bleach: Thousand-Year Blood War Hit fans with a one-two punch of information in the latest episode, revealing the Soul King’s true name and why Ichigo had to be the one to kill him. Both pieces of information are withheld in the manga, and ultimately offer an explanation for Yhwach’s somewhat confusing actions in the lead up to the Soul King’s death.
The name of the Soul King is revealed to be AdnieusApparently derived from a Hebrew term for God, Adonai, much as Yvach’s name is derived from Yahweh. This name connection further supports the idea of Yahuah being the Son of God, and all the apocalyptic events surrounding his “second coming” during Thousand-year blood war. The revelation of the name Adnyeus confirms that the Soul King’s name is hinted at in Part 2, when the Auswhalen chant mentions the “coffin of Adnyeus,” likely referring to the crystal in which the Soul King’s body is trapped.
The Soul King can only be defeated by Ichigo
Ichigo had to be the one to kill the Soul King
One of the more confusing moments in the U.S bleach Manga is when Yhwach reveals that he has already stabbed the Soul King, and Ichigo pulls out the blade, only to be forced to attack again, this time bisecting the Soul King’s body and ensuring his death. It was never explained why Yhwach had Ichigo do this, and to many fans, it seemed like it was an action done out of cruelty, not necessity. However, the anime version of the scene added some explanation from Yhwach, revealing that in fact, it was only Ichigo who could have killed the Soul King.
JHwatch states that the Soul King can only truly be killed by a being who wields the power of a human, a Quincy, a Soul Reaper, a Hollow, and a Fullbringer – all powers that Ichigo is known to possess.. These five types of beings represent basically all the lifeforms that exist within bleachs universe, and so Ichigo, as a member of all groups, is the ultimate representative of the world. Why exactly such a being is needed to kill the Soul King, and how Iwach knew about this detail, still remains a mystery, but it at least offers some explanation for why Iwach had Ichigo do it.
Yhwach claims that all of Ichigo’s battles and struggles were to bring him to this moment, to ensure that he unlocked and gained access to the abilities of each of the groups listed above. If Yhwach is to be believed, Ichigo’s entire life was only to allow him to be the one to kill the Soul King on Yhwach’s behalf, which explains why Yhwach already had an interest in Ichigo even before his soul invasion. Society, and what he went. Easy on Ichigo when they have their first confrontation.
Ichigo was used by Yhwach from the beginning
Yhwach treated Ichigo as a tool whose purpose was now fulfilled
Yhwach clearly couldn’t have had a hand in actually shaping Ichigo’s life, due to the fact that he was sealed away and recovering for much of it. In many ways, Ichigo’s life was actually shaped by Sosuke Aizen, of all people; Aizen released the Hollow White, which attacked his mother, leading to the development of his own Hollow powers, and which led to his mother meeting his father, giving him access to Soul Reaper powers. His mother, of course, was a Quincy, bringing Quincy blood into the equation, and fullbrengers are said to be born when a mother is attacked by a Hollow before the birth of her child.
Yahweh’s claim means more about the fate that plays in his favor, rather than a declaration of a plan of his coming to fruition. Yahweh clearly had a lot of intelligence about what was going on in the Soul Society before he awakened the Wandering, and perhaps he had an understanding of the powers that Ichigo possessed, realizing that they were perfect for his own ambitions. However, one can’t help but wonder if Aizen has plans involving the Soul King as well, since he – intentionally or not – is the one who set Ichigo up for this role.
Now that Ichigo has done what Yahweh told him to do, it is extremely dangerous for him to immediately try to take Ichigo out of the picture. It goes without saying that with the death of the soul king Adnia, the foundation of the three worlds has already broken, leading to destruction. And shake in an earthquake. Killing Ichigo at this point may seem unnecessary, as everyone and everything is already set to be destroyed. These are looking incredibly dark Bleach: Thousand-Year Blood WarAnd hopefully Ichigo can recover from what has happened enough to take action.
