Batman and Superman It will always be one of my favorite pairs, as it is difficult to beat the Best in the World. However, DC is officially giving the Dark Knight and Man of Steel a run for their money by teaming up two of my favorite female heroes. With a new comic release, these two have proven that they are an incredible dream team, working perfectly in sync with each other – and I need more of them, immediately.
For two characters who rarely work together, their level of synchronicity surpasses even Batman and Superman's iconic partnership...
DC's ALL IN initiative has brought significant changes to the DC Universe, one of the most notable and welcome being the return of the Justice League. The team's roster now includes all of Earth-Prime's heroes, an unprecedented change for a group that has traditionally consisted of only Earth's elite heroes.
While reactions to this change have been mixed, an undeniable positive is the opportunity to see heroes who rarely interact come together, creating new and exciting dynamics in DC narratives. A notable example of this is the partnership between Wonder Woman and Mary Marvel in Mark Waid and Dan Mora's Justice League Unlimited #2.
Mary Marvel and Wonder Woman team up in Justice League Unlimited #2
Diana and Mary have a synchronicity that rivals that of Batman and Superman
Mary Marvel and Wonder Woman are easily two of my favorite female DC characters. While my love for Diana is obvious — because, honestly, how could you not love a badass Amazonian warrior princess — my deep admiration for Mary Marvel might come as a surprise. Mary is a more nuanced and lesser-known character compared to Wonder Woman, but one comic book series completely won me over (and would win you over too): Matthew Rosenberg and Alex Paknadel. D.C. vs. Vampires: Total War. If a character can be a total badass and make me ugly cry multiple times, they instantly earn a spot on my favorites list.
So when Mary Marvel and Wonder Woman teamed up Justice League Unlimited #2, I was ecstatic to see two of my favorites working together – and my enthusiasm was more than rewarded. My expectations were completely shattered when Waid and Mora established them as an absolute dream team in just a single page of dialogue and art. As the two heroines discuss how to deal with a Parademon nest, they perfectly finish each other's sentences before simultaneously reaching the same conclusion: “We should carry it into space.” For two characters who rarely work together, their level of synchronicity surpasses even the iconic partnership of Batman and Superman, venturing into the rare and perfectly synchronized dynamic of Batman and Robin.
Waid gives a brilliant explanation for Wonder Woman and Mary Marvel's instant synchronicity
"I speak with the wisdom of Athena. You carry the wisdom of Minerva." – Wonder Woman in Justice League Unlimited #2 (2025)
I love the 'finishing each other's sentences' trope - especially when it involves Parademon's antics - but Waid provides an incredibly cool explanation for why Mary Marvel and Wonder Woman are so in sync despite barely knowing each other. When Mary calls the moment "weird," Wonder Woman responds, "He was? I speak with the wisdom of Athena. You carry Minerva's wisdom. The Greeks and Romans weren’t that different.” This not only serves as a fantastic reminder of each heroine's origins, but also makes their almost instantaneous synchronicity seem believable.
I really hope we get to see more of Mary Marvel and Wonder Woman working together in Justice League Unlimitedas there is immense potential for your connection to develop into a meaningful friendship. The significant age difference between them also opens the door to a mentee-mentor dynamicwhich is hinted at in a brief exchange. When Maria comments on a misconception she had about the gods, Diana kindly responds: “Ah, child. You still have a lot to learn about the various pantheons... If that's not the perfect setup for an epic mentor-mentee relationship, I don't know what is.
Wonder Woman Is Officially Entering Her 'Girl's Girl' Era With New Female Friendships
Derrick Chew Cover E Card Stock Variant for Justice League Unlimited #2 (2024)
In addition to more interactions between Wonder Woman and Mary Marvel, I'm hopeful that Diana will also begin to form closer bonds with other DC heroines. Based on recent cover art, the most likely candidates appear to be Star Sapphire and The Question. Derrick Chew variant cover for Justice League Unlimited #2 features Diana and Carol together, while Nathan Szerdy's variant for issue #3 features them accompanied by Renee. If these covers are any indication, it seems Wonder Woman will gain a lot of quality “girl time” in the near future - and I, for one, can't wait.
