Batgirl #1 begins with immediate drama between mother and daughter, when Lady Shiva begins the conversation by stating: “You know, I never wanted a daughter,” only for Cassandra to respond, “You talk… like I want a mother.” With these opening lines, Brombal deftly establishes their complex dynamics. The two women continue to banter for a while, but it isn’t long before the primary conflict that drives the series emerges when Lady Shiva reveals she summoned her daughter because their lives are in grave danger; a group of trained assassins have their eyes on them and plan to kill them.

Shiva’s intentions go beyond just delivering a warning when she states: “…despite our past history and your opinions of me, I am here to protect you from them.” This revelation is surprising, given that Lady Shiva is not typically known for her maternal protection.– a fact of which Cassandra is well aware. Her skepticism is evident when she responds: “I don’t believe you,” then turns his back on his mother and leaves. The preview ends here, but despite Cassandra’s rejection of the implied offer to work together, fans know the two will eventually join forces, as this unlikely partnership is central to the series.
